Eldon Earle Davidson, Marine Corps veteran
Eldon Earle Davidson, 87, of Savannah, Ga. died Monday, May 14.
He was the husband of Mary J. (Cocreham) Davidson.
He was born in Dennis and graduated from Yarmouth High School, where he played varsity football and basketball.
He graduated from Norwich University with a bachelor’s degree in biology, and became a Naval Aviation Cadet. He graduated from the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla. and was selected for a commission in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served as a pilot from 1943-1963 when he retired. While in the Marine Corps he attended and graduated from the U.S. Naval Post-Graduate School with a master’s degree in meteorology and from the U.S. Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School. He served two combat tours in World War II beginning in the South Pacific and ending in North China. He also served during the Korean War. Prior to retiring from the Corps, he served a tour with the aviation support group for President Eisenhower’s trips to Europe and South America.
After retiring from the Corps, he became the assistant manager at Raleigh-Durham Airport and was later hired as executive director of Savannah International Airport from 1964-1991.
He served on the Savannah Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Savannah Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Board and the Salvation Army Board, was a director on the Board at Atlantic Bank and Trust Company and later an advisory director on the Board of Bank South. He was president of the Kiwanis Club of Savannah and member of both the Rotary Club and Navy League of Savannah.
Besides his wife, he leaves sons, Earle Davidson II of Memphis, Tenn.; James Davidson of Savannah, William Davidson of Santa Fe, N.M.; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at St. Francis of the Islands Episcopal Church, Savannah.
