Notes
General:
Occupation: Sheriff & Military Officer
Education: Graduated from Harvard College in 1755

Charles was educated as a lawyer and appointed first Sheriff of Lincoln County, which office he held both before and during the Revolution, and also for many years after. He resided at Pownalboro. The fact of his occupying responsible public stations from the age of 26 to his death continuously both under the royal and republican governments, a period of 50 years, is sufficient proof of his ability, faithfulness and integrity. He was a gentleman worthy of his distinguished ancestors.

Military: Revolutionary War. In 1776, when the Maine Militia was reorganized, was appointed to command the Eastern Regiment, with the title of Colonel. In January 1777, he was made Brigadier for Lincoln Co. He made himself especially obnoxious to the loyalists by his vigilance in the discharge of his duties as sheriff and military officer, and towards the close of the war, in 1781, he (then a Brigadier General) was seized at night by a loyalist party under John Jones; a violent Tory, taken from his bed, compelled to hurry on his clothes and was carried away to the British army at Castine, where he was retained for some time as a prisoner. His functions as Sheriff and Brigadier General seem to have ceased soon after this time when he removed to Boston and he next appears as Clerk of the Courts in Suffolk and Nantucket Counties in 1783, which office he held to his death, in 1810.

Cushing, Charles. List of brigadiers elected for the various counties in Massachusetts; said Cushing appointed Brigadier for Lincoln County, January 31, 1777; also, list dated Pownalborough, June 3, 1778, of men raised to serve in the Continental Army, agreeable to resolve of April 20, 1778, as returned by said Cushing, Brigadier forLincoln County; also, list dated Pownalborough, August 20, 1778, of men raisedin Lincoln County to serve as guards over troops of convention, magazines and public stores, under Gen. Heath, as returned by said Cushing, Brigadier for Lincoln County; also, list dated Pownalborough, August 20, 1778, of men raised by said Cushing, Brigadier for Lincoln County, to march to Providence to join troops under Col. Wade and Col. Jacobs.

Notes
General:
Charles was a Representative 1780-81-84-90-91-92-93, and member of the Senate in 1794.
He removed with his family, in 1791, from Hingham to Lunenburg, Massachusetts and settled on what has since been called the "Brook Farm", about one mile west of the centre of the town, where he died in 1809. His wife lived to bequite old with her daughter Mrs. Harrington; she used to say she was the youngest of 16 sisters.
Lincoln's History of Hingham says: "Charles Cushing was oneof the most respectable and influential Whigs of the Revolution in Hingham. Hewas a gentleman of excellent natural abilities, zealous and persevering in whatever he engaged."
"On a quiet street in Hingham Center, two houses sit comfortably side by side. One has been there since 1785, when it was built by Colonel Charles Cushing. Badly in need of repair when it was bought by the present owners eight years ago, this fine old house has been completely restored. The frontfacade and two front rooms remain essentially unchanged, however. Here the original fireplace and paneling remain. A new wing to the rear, which matches the older part of the house, provides for a family room and master bedroom, while the attic has been opened up to create quarters for a daughter. The yard contains a surprise, not only is there a swimming pool but a waterfall as well."

Military: Charles was a member of the Committee of Correspondence 1779-81, andserved with the Continental Army all through the Revolutionary War. As Captain ofa Hingham company in Gen. Thomas' command, he was in the expedition to Canada, and saved his company from the ravages of small-pox, so generally disastrous to the army in that expedition by the then ultra proceeding of inoculation. He returned on horseback across the Hoossac Ridge. Afterwards, Colonel of a Continental Regiment.

Notes
General:
Daniel Cushing left a full and minute will, dated 11 September 1693. A lot of land was granted to him by the Town of Hingham in 1665. He was a wheelwright and became a freeman in 1671, was an active magistrate and for many years Town Clerk of Hingham, and by the faithful discharge of the duties of this last officerendered invaluable service to the modern antiquary. From 1682 and for many years he kept a country store. Selectman in 1665 and for many years after. In theyears 1680, 1682 and 1695, he was delegate to the General Court.
A work has been published, styled (Extracts from the Minutes of Daniel Cushing, of Hingham, with a photograph of his manuscript, etc.) Boston - folio. Press of John Wilson & Son, 1865; printed by Lincoln. Henry Austin Whitney, of Boston, prepared anaddition containing a list of names of persons from Hingham, England, and printed by Drake.
Mr. Cushing had a general store and along with his daily accounts he recorded many of the town's events and considerable of it's gossip; - the time Israel Leavitt abused Mr. and Mrs. Norton with base speeches, Mr. Norton being the minister; the time his boy and the minister's son imbibed too freely; the hasty marriages and other items of popular interest. His record is a valuable one as well as amusing. A photographic copy of it is a unique addition to Massachusetts Historical literature. At the age of seventy, his wife having been dead several years, he enters in his diary his courtship with the widow Thatcher as follows:

"Nov 27, 1689, bargained with E.T.
Dec. 3, 1689, E.T. denied the bargain
Dec. 13, 1689, Agreed again
May 1, 1690, Agreed."

The wedding followed soon after this entry. The bride was Elizabeth Jacob Thatcher, his first wife's cousin. His son Daniel married her daughter..

DANIEL, Hingham, eldest son of first Matthew, born at Hingham, England 1619, a wheelwright, came with his father 1638, freeman 1671, representative 1680, 1682, and 1695, married 10 June 1645, Lydia, daughter of Edward Gilman, who died 1689, had Peter, born 1646; Daniel, 1648; Deborah, 18 November 1651; Jeremiah, 3, baptized 9 July 1654, H. C. 1676; Theophilus, 29 May, baptized 7 June 1657; and Matthew, 15 July 1660. His second wife was Elizabeth widow of John Thaxter, daughter of Nicholas Jacob, married 9 March 1691, and she died 1725, aged 93. He died 3 December 1700, having as third town clerk of Hingham rendered says Lincoln, for many years invaluable service to the modest antiquary. I hope he recorded the names of hisdaughters if he had more than Deborah, married 25 September 1679, Henry Tarleton, and next, 31 August 1686, Reverend Benjamin Woodbridge of Bristol. The willof Cushing of 11 September 1693, written with admirable precision yet with much minuteness, filled more than six close folio pages, is in our records XIV. 293. It provides for the recent wife, five sons, daughter Deborah, and her husband Benjamin Woodbridge, and sister Deborah, wife of Matthew Briggs.

"To Daniel Cushing, that town [Hingham] is indebted for the first accurate records of the proceedings of the town. His clerkship commenced in 1669, and the method andneatness of the records for many years, does him much credit."
