Barnstable Patriot obit:
Wilton B. Crosby, 83

New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Wilton Bradford "Bill" Crosby, 83, died July 25, 2006.

He was the husband of Barbara Edwards Crosby and was the former husband of the late Elizabeth J. (Underwood) Crosby.

Mr. Crosby was born in Hyannis and was a graduate of Barnstable High School, Luscomb School of Aeronautics in Trenton, N.J., and Emery Riddle Flight School in Florida. He joined the Air Force at the end of World War II and flew F-86 Saber Jets with the 51st Fighter Wing in Korea in 1952. He served in the Air Force Reserves for many years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.

After returning from Korea, he worked at the family business, Crosby Yacht Building and Storage Co. Inc., in Osterville. He operated a branch of that business in Hyannis for a time. He was one of five co-owners of the boatyard, operated by the Crosby family in Osterville since the early 1800s until it was sold in 1972. He continued to work for Crosby Yacht Yard until his retirement in the 1980s.

He was involved in all aspects of the business, including the design of several power boats built at the yard, and was involved in construction and care of the Wianno Senior sailboats and Crosby Stripers for many years. In the late 1960s he was involved in the design and construction of the first Crosby catboats built by the yard since 1935, which proved to be the last two wooden Crosby Catboats built in Osterville.

He loved boating, participating in Newport-to-Bermuda races and in schooner races off Gloucester and Nova Scotia as well as regattas around the Cape and Islands.

He was on the board of directors for the Hyannis Cooperative Bank for many years, and he was a founding member of the Catboat Association and a member of the Saber Jet Pilots Association.

He was a longtime resident of Osterville and Barnstable before moving to Florida in 1988.

Besides his wife, survivors include a son, Britton William Crosby of Osterville; a stepson, Richard Shultz of Columbus, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Martha Alberti of Marietta, Ga.; and six grandchildren.

A funeral was held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Osterville. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in that village.

Memorial donations may be made to Osterville Historical Society; or to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

ZENAS CROSBY.
Born in Brewster, February 3, 1817. Among other ships that he commanded was the "Kingfisher." A relative writes as follows ;
Once while crossing the Atlantic in the "Kingfisher," in a severe northwest gale, as he and his mate were taking the sun, they were struck by a heavy sea, which carried them both
overboard. The mate sank from sight at once, but Captain Crosby, when being carried over the side, grasped a rope and took a double turn around his arm as he was going into the
sea. The man at the wheel saw what had happened and rang the bell ; the watch rushed aft, caught the other end of the rope and hauled him on board. He was severely wrenched, so that he was unable to stand on deck, and he was lashed to deck-house that he might direct the sailing of the ship all that
afternoon. This occurred on the voyage from 1851 to 1853. He died at La Paz, Lower California, while in command of ship "Kingfisher." 15
