Neil Cowie
Centerville - Neil Cowie of Centerville passed away, following a courageous fight against cancer, July 3, 2010.
Mr. Cowie was born and grew up in McGivney, York County, New Brunswick, Canada. He was one of seven children. As a young boy, he learned what it was like to learn, serve and earn an honest day's pay as a logger in the local Canadian forests.
In 1959, he was part of an exchange program between the U.S. and Canada, working as a Dendrician for Bartlett Tree Experts in Osterville. In 1961, Mr. Cowie enlisted in the Army for two years. At the end of his enlistment, he returned to Bartlett, where he soon became a foreman and expert tree mover. During his Bartlett career, he transplanted thousands of trees and shrubs, improving our Cape and Islands towns, parks, highways and personal properties, not to mention the dozens of young tree workers he trained on the art of tree moving. There isn't a street on Cape Cod or Nantucket that hasn't been blessed by Mr. Cowie's careful and artful tree care.
One such tree was a large 48-inch European beech he transplanted in 1991 at the Cape Cod Hospital, making way for the new emergency room. During the job, Mr. Cowie commented that he had moved the tree once before in the 1960s.
For decades, he was the first man to work, always saying, "A fine morning for it," and the last to leave, working every day with a do-whatever-it-takes attitude. Kind-hearted and caring for hundreds of clients and their properties, he distinguished himself by being one of the first Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Monitor Technicians for the Bartlett Company and in the arboricultural industry in 1985. Knowing about each plant species and its cultural requirements was his specialty. He helped deliver and track every early Bartlett research IPM trial for the industry in the mid-1980s, diminishing the use of pesticides by 97 percent.
A six-time winner of the Bartlett Safety Award, Mr. Cowie, one of the best arborists in the country, only had a minor accident in the field back in 1967. Every tree man on Cape Cod either trained under Mr. Cowie or respected him for his vast knowledge and skill, wondering how he ever could do the work of two men and only was 5-foot-3 and 130 pounds. It was his work ethic that carried him through the good weather and bad, never missing a day to help others to help their trees and landscapes.
Mr. Cowie was husband to Donna, and father to their daughter Dawn (Powell) and son-in-law Keith Powell, and grandfather to Shawn and Mackenzie Powell. His brother, Hedley, and three sisters, Gladys Munn, Barb Murin, and Rena Neales, all from New Brunswick, also survive him. He was predeceased by his father Sterling Cowie, mother G. Irene Cowie, brother Ross Cowie and sister Joan Peterson.
A funeral service was held at the Doane, Beale and Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis.
Donations in Mr. Cowie's name can be made to Cape Cod Horticultural Society, PO Box 934, Osterville, MA, where he planted and tended so many trees. A tree will be planted in his honor at Armstrong-Kelley Park, Osterville on his birthday April 30, 2011, the day after Arbor Day.

Bernard T. Cowing, 84, of Truro, formerly of Provincetown and South Boston, died March 15 at Cape End Manor Nursing Home in Provincetown.
Born in South Boston, he was the son of the late Harold and Olivia (Lopes) Cowing.
Mr. Cowing was the husband of the former Provincetown town treasurer, Marguerite (Dunford) Cowing, to whom he was married for 64 years. He had been a summer resident of Provincetown throughout most of his early life. He was very proud of the fact that he was a Mayflower descendent. Mr. Cowing was a professional photographer who worked for the Morse photography company in Mattapan. For several years he managed the bakery at Jordan Marsh Co. at Downtown Crossing in Boston, retiring in 1973 when he moved his family permanently to Provincetown. He became a very active full-time resident, working as a bank teller at Seamen’s Bank during the day while working nights on the front desk at the Provincetown Inn for many years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Provincetown and a member and a past president of the Provincetown Rotary Club. He was one of the founders of Provincetown High School Hockey team. During the 1970s he served on the town finance committee.
In addition to his wife, Marguerite, he is survived by his son Bernard M. “Mickey” Cowing and his wife, Elaine, of Raynham; his son Brian R. Cowing and his wife, Ruth Anne, of Provincetown; and son Sean J. Cowing and his wife, Michelle, of Truro; six grandchildren, Mark, Christa, Zack, Lauren, Alex and Brianna; and his cousin Mary Lou Santos of Truro. He was predeceased by his brothers, the late Harold and Maurice Cowing.
A memorial service for Mr. Cowing will be held in the near future. If desired memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Gately-McHoul Funeral Home of Provincetown.
