Notes
General:
The first of his family in New England, is said to have been born in Chelmsford, England, the son of Nathaniel Covell, who is thought to have started, or was making preparations for coming to America, and died about that time. EdwardMarriage Notes (Sarah Nickerson)
Winslow, who was in England on business at this time, agreed to take the son Nathaniel from that date until seven years, according to the custom of the time, and they "Arrived Att Boston 26 of August 1653." The indenture between Mr. Winslow and Nathaniel was made on April 18, 1653, and is printed in Mayflower Descendant, vol. 9, page 163. He was soon after assigned by Winslow to his step-son Peregrine White, of Marshfield, and served his time in the employ of the first white man born in Plymouth Colony. (White First Farm) Indentured to Edward Winslow on 4/18 /1653 for 7 years.
The History of Chatham states, "the exact year in which Nathaniel Covell died is not certain but it was not far from 1682 in which year Robert Eldredge, his brother-in-law (husband of Elizabeth) died. Both were in the prime of life and left large families". Nathaniel, a saddler, arrived in Boston on 26 August 1653, from England. When he was yet a boy and his father lay dying, he agreed to serve Mr. Edward Winslow of Marshfield, Mass. until 7 years after his arrival in New England. For part of this period Mr. Winslow assigned him to his son-in-law, Peregrine White. For his service he was to receive "his passage over, his support, and 10 pounds in goods and commodities, 13 bushels of Indian corn, and a good double apparel at the end of his time". His employ over he went toYarmouth where he married Sarah. Soon afterward they moved to Monomoit and lived on land given to Sarah by her father, near Alewife River and Ryder's Cove. He was designated constable in 1674. 6
There are conflicts in the Rootsweb data in the birthplaces of the children. Monomoy (or Monomoyick, or several other spellings) was the native and settler name for the area that became Chatham in 1712. I have tentatively assigned the birth of all the children there.
