Ralph R. Coombs Jr.

ORLEANS — Ralph R. Coombs, 77, died Jan. 9 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. He was the husband of Catherine (Pettengill) Coombs for 56 years. He was the son of the late Ralph R. Coombs Sr. and Irene (Berry) Coombs.

Mr. Coombs, born and raised in Springfield, was a graduate of Loomis School in Windsor, Conn., and Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

A dairy farmer in Vermont and Hardwick, Mass., he moved his family to Orleans in 1967, where he was employed by Doyle News Agency. He also worked as a carpenter. He then was a longtime employee of Cape Cod Sea Camps, until his retirement in 2003.

He enjoyed gardening, wildlife, his family and was an avid Nauset basketball fan. For 38 years, he supported the Orleans Cardinals baseball team and for many years could be seen passing the hat at games.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, John Coombs of Orleans and Steven Coombs of Florence; four daughters, Mary Coombs of Stow, Joanne Motley of Puyallup, Wash., Jean Dansak of Brewster, and Kathleen Argo of Orleans; his sister, Joan Richard of Shelburne, Vt.; four grandsons; four granddaughters; two nieces and one nephew. He was predeceased by his sister, Lucile Johnson and one niece.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. in the Federated Church of Orleans, Main Street, Orleans. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Massachusetts Office, 330 Congress St., 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02210.
