USS Hornet (1805-1829)Marriage Notes (Sally Cobb)
"USS Hornet, a 441-ton brig-sloop built at Baltimore, Maryland, was commissioned in October 1805. She operated along the U.S. Atlantic coast and in the Mediterranean until decommissioned in late 1807. Recommissioned a year later, she again cruised in U.S. waters and took dispatches to Europe. In 1811 Hornet was converted to a ship-sloop at the Washington Navy Yard, D.C..
Hornet rendered conspicuous service during the War of 1812. Early in the conflict she served with Commodore John Rodgers' squadron, capturing the privateer Dolphin in July 1812. Later in the year she blockaded the British sloop of war Bonne Citoyenne at Bahia, Brazil, and on 24 February 1813 defeated and sank HMS Peacock. For much of the rest of 1813 and most of 1814 Hornet was in port at New London, Connecticut, unable to leave in the face of superior British forces offshore. However, she got to sea in mid-November 1814 and sailed to the south Atlantic. On 23 March 1815, off Tristan da Cunha island, USS Hornet captured the British sloop Penguin, one of several actions between the U.S. and Royal Navies that took place after the War of 1812 had formally ended, but before all ships at sea had learned of the settlement.
In 1818-1819 Hornet operated in the West Indies and the Mediterranean. She participated in the anti-piracy campaign in the Caribbean during the 1820s, capturing one pirate schooner off Santo Domingo in late October 1821. While off Tampico, Mexico, on 29 September 1829, USS Hornet was dismasted in a gale and sank with her entire complement [of 145]."

Plymouth Colony: Its History and People 1620-1691
Part One: Chronological Histories
Chapter 5: Quaker Ranters, Baptist Schismatics, and Indians with Tongues Running Out (1657-1675)
One of the leading men at Dartmouth was John Cooke, who had a varied career in Plymouth Colony. In his life, which was virtually coextensive with the life of the colony, can be seen much of Plymouth's history. He came over on the Mayflower in 1620 with his father, Francis Cooke, and he died 23 November 1695, perhaps the last male survivor of the first Plymouth colonists. He was old enough to be made a freeman on 1 January 1633/34 and he was on the 1632/33, but not the 1633/34, tax list, being called John Cooke, Jr. to distinguish him from John Cooke, Sr., who must have been older, but no relationship is known. On 28 March 1634/35 he married Sarah Warren, daughter of Mayflower passenger Richard Warren. Since both the Cooke and Warren families were fairly large, he was allied with a good number of Plymouth families, though he must have had ability of his own to be singled out for leadership. Nathaniel Morton wrote that Cooke, Mr. John Doane, and Mr. William Paddy were deacons under the Reverend John Reyner, and John Dunham became a deacon later. Reyner became minister in 1636, and John Doane was a deacon at least as early as 2 January 1633/34, when he resigned his office as Assistant because of his deaconship. Thus John Cooke must have been a relatively young man when he became a deacon. On 16 May 1639 the townsmen of Plymouth elected four "comittes" to be added to the governor and council to make laws: John Doane, Manasseh Kempton, John Dunham, and John Cooke, Jr.
-------------------------
SS
"John was baptized at Leyden, Holland between 1 January and 31 March 1607.
John came to Plymouth with his father in 1620 on the Mayflower. He was probably about 13 years old at the time. At Plymouth he was Deputy to General Court in 1639. He became a deacon of the Plymouth Church in the 1630s, but he was excommunicated from the church ca. 1657 -- probably about the time he became a Baptist. He removed to Acushnet, Dartmouth with the early settlers. He served on juries and on various special assignments, and was Deputy to General Court many terms.
In 1664 he was granted fifteen acres of land near Dartmouth (PCR 4:67), and he had other significant land dealings in the area. In 1666 he was a deputy for Dartmouth (PCR 4:122). He was one of the advisers for the defense of Dartmouth against the Indians (PCR 4:146). He became a magistrate for Dartmouth authorized to marry, to administer oaths, and to issue warrants for court trials at Plymouth (PCR 4:163). Though Nathaniel Morton called him "a shallow man," he appeared to be a populist-type leader who was also able to command the respect of the authorities.
His will is dated 9 November 1694, proved 16 April 1696. The will mention wife Sarah; son-in-law Arthur Hathaway and his wife Sarah my daugher; son-in-law Stephen West and his wife Marcay my daughter; Jonathan Delano; grandson Thomas Taber; granddaughter Hester Perry.
Inventory was taken 7 December 1695. It has been printed in error that the inventory was presented by wife Sarah on 7 December 1696.
