REVEREND WILLIAM CLARKE, M.A.

Reverend William Clarke was a son of the Reverend Peter Clarke of Danvers, Massachusetts, and was graduated at Harvard College in 1759. After ordination in England, he became rector of St. Paul's Church, Dedham. There he lived until 1777, when he was sentenced to be confined on board a ship because he refused to acknowledge the independency of America, which he says, "was contrary to the sentiments I had of my duty to my King, my country, and my God." After being released, he went first to Rhode Island, then to New York, then to Ireland, then to England; and in 1786, to Halifax, Nova Scotia, whence he soon removed to Digby. He finally returned to the United States and died in Quincy, Mass., in 1815. He married Mrs. Dunbar, a delicate young widow, who, Reverend Mr. Bailey wrote, was "as unable to rough it as himself." 1

"John Cleaveland (Yale 1745) was born on April 11, 1722, the son of Josiah and Abigail (Paine) Cleaveland of Canterbury, Connecticut. He became a communicant member of the Canterbury church on September 14, 1740, and entered Yale College the following year. During his freshman year, Cleaveland kept the diary which is printed here.* In November 1744, he and his brother, Ebenezer (Yale 1748), were accused of having attended an illegal "separatist" church meeting. Canterbury had been split by the revivals. A majority of the communicants in the Canterbury church were New Lights, or supporters of the revivals. A majority of the congregation, which included all taxpayers (both communicants and non-communicants) were Old Lights, or opponents of the revivals. The Old Lights wished to settle a minister, James Cogswell (Yale 1742), who was unacceptable to the New Lights. Under the leadership of the Cleavelands' uncles, Solomon and Elisha Paine, neither of whom was a college graduate or a minister, the New Lights began to hold meetings in private homes. It was the Cleavelands' attendance at these meetings to which Rector Thomas Clap of Yale objected. The rector charged them with a violation of the laws of God, of the colony, and of the college. The Cleavelands admitted the facts of the case but disclaimed any knowledge that their actions had been illegal. Clap demanded a public confession; the Cleavelands refused and were expelled in January . 1745- They eventually received their degrees, John in 1763 and Ebenezer in 1775. John studied theology with the Reverend Philemon Robbins (Harvard 1729) of Branford, Connecticut, and supplied the pulpit of the separatist church in Boston (Eleventh Congregational Church). In 1747, he was ordained at the separatist church in Chebacco Parish of Ipswich (later Essex). The two churches and parishes were reunited by 1776, and Cleaveland was sole pastor until his death, April 22, 1799.
