Hyannis
- Alden Belmont Childs Jr. died at his home Sept. 21, 2006.
He was the husband of Rita (Robert) Childs with whom he had just celebrated his 59th wedding anniversary.
Born in West Barnstable, Mr. Childs spent his entire life on Cape Cod. He graduated from Barnstable High School in 1939 while working at Puritan Clothing on Main Street in Hyannis.
Mr. Childs volunteered to serve in the Air Force in 1942. A sergeant, he was an aerial engineer and top turret gunner in an 8th Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress in the 385th Bombardment Group. He flew more than 20 missions in Great Britain and was in the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war, he married and began working at the Hyannis Post Office, where he was a letter carrier for more than 20 years. He received an honorary certificate for saving the life of an elderly Hyannis woman who had been bedridden and malnourished for nearly a month.
Mr. Childs worked for 13 years with the Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority before retiring.
He was an avid shellfisherman and sports enthusiast. One of his greatest experiences was watching his favorite team, the Boston Red Sox, win the 2004 World Series.
A skilled candlepin bowler, he was the first person ever to bowl a triple strike on regional television in the 1960s.
A member of the VFW and Elks Lodge, he enjoyed marching in parades with comrades and making public appearances in support of servicemen.
Mr. Childs loved to draw and built up an extensive collection of stamps as a lifelong collector. He had a great sense of humor, and a deep love for his family and Cape Cod.
Besides his wife, survivors include two daughters, Sharon Fitzpatrick of Sagamore Beach and Cynthia Kolnos of Hyannisport; two sons, Robert Childs of Ocala, Fla., and Alden B. Childs III of Hyannis; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and countless cousins and friends.
Donations can be made to Cape Cod Hospice and Palliative Care, 270 Communications Way Building No. 3, Hyannis MA 02601
