Elsias Henry Chase, venerable resident of North Eastham, holder of the Post cane as the town's oldest resident, and grandfather and uncle of a number of Lower Cape survivors, died yesterday at the age of 96 and funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Nickerson Funeral Home in Wellfleet with interment in the Evergreen Cemetery in Eastham.
Mr. Chase was born in Brewster, a son of Asa and Roxanna Crosby Chase. His first wife was Sarah Gill, and his second, Elizabeth Cosgrove, died in 1944. He was a member, for many years, of the Eastham Grange, and also of the Wellfleet Methodist Church.
He is survived by a stepson, Thomas Cosgrove of the Navy, now in California; five grandchildren, Mrs. Minnie Brewer and Mrs. Althea Rowell of North Eastham, William Gill of North Truro, Bernard Gill of Quincy and Norman Gill of Wellfleet; neices Mrs. Lottie Higgins of Wellfleet, Mrs. Ethel Eldredge of South Harwich, Mrs. Rose Higgins of Bath, Me., Mrs. Rebecca Vickers of Provincetown and Mrs. Letitia DeGroot of South Wellfleet; nephews, Edmund Lee of Harwich and Matthew Lee of Wellfleet and great-grandchildren."
