She is known to New England genealogists for her detailed book on the Higgins family, "Richard Higgins, a resident and pioneer settler at Plymouth and Eastham, Massachusetts, and at Piscataway, New Jersey, and his descendants." published in Worcester in 1918. A supplement was published in 1924.

Biographical Cyclopedia of U.S. Women

HIGGINS, KATHARINE CHAPIN (Mrs. Milton P. Higgins), daughter of Aldus M. and Catherine Fisher (Sawin) Chapin, was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, December 11, 1847. Her father (born at Chicopee, Massachusetts, December 27, 1811; died at Worcester, Massachusetts, June 4, 1880), was a descendant of Deacon Samuel Chapin, a native of Paignton, Devonshire, England, whose name appears first in New England in the land records of Roxbury, Massachusetts, in 1631.

This Samuel Chapin was the son of John Chapin of Paignton, and was christened October 8, 1598. He brought to the new world his wife, Cicelly, daughter of Henry Penny of Paignton, whom he married at Paignton, February 9, 1623, and their five children. In 1642 he became one of the founders of the new settlement of Springfield, in Massachusetts, where William Pyncheon had already established himself. He took a prominent part in the town in both civil and religious affairs, was a Deacon of the church and a member of the first board of selectmen, for nine consecutive years.

Aldus M. Chapin married May 13, 1840, Catherine Fisher Sawin (born at Sherborn, Massachusetts, May 3, 1819; died July 12, 1878), a descendant of Robert Sawin of Boxford, Suffolk, England, whose son, John, was a resident of Watertown, Massachusetts, as shown by the town records, in 1652, and later of Natick. His son, John, was the first white child born in that town. The line is traced through another son, Thomas, a soldier in King Philip's War: his son, John; his son, Thomas, a captain in the Revolutionary War; his son, Moses, who also served in that war as a corporal; and his son, Bela, who was the father of Catherine Sawin.

Catherine Sawin entered Mt. Holyoke Seminary in 1839, two years after its opening, and thus came under the teaching of its founder, Mary Lyon. In this exceptional environment of scholarship and high ideals the young girl's character broadened and developed. She was trained to become a teacher and eventually was considered the leading woman in educational affairs in Manchester, New Hampshire, where she spent the greater part of her married life. In 1857 she removed with her husband and children to Dubuque, Iowa, where they remained three years, then returning to Manchester.

Katharine Chapin entered school in 1860, and proceeded to Abbot Female Seminary (now Abbot Academy), Andover, Massachusetts, where she completed the course in 1868. She embraced the profession of teaching, and throughout her life has been identified with progress in education. She was married June 15, 1870, at Manchester, New Hampshire, to Milton Prince Higgins, son of Lewis and Susan (Whitney) Higgins. His ancestry was notable, being traced to the Mayflower Pilgrims, and in the old country to William the Conqueror. He was born at Standish, Maine, December 7, 1842, and died in Worcester, Massachusetts, March 8, 1912. As a successful manufacturer, the President of the Norton Emery Wheel Company and of the Plunger Elevator Company, he saw the need of technical training in colleges, and was the first to promote commercial trade schools in the United States. For twenty-eight years he was Superintendent of the Washburn Machine Shops at Worcester Polytechnic Institute of which he was a Trustee, and he was Vice-President of the American Society [p.380] of Mechanical Engineers. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins were the parents of four children: Aldus Chapin Higgins (born in Worcester, Massachusetts, December 7, 1872), Treasurer of the Norton Company and Trustee of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute; John Woodman Higgins (born in Worcester, September 1, 1874), President of the Worcester Pressed Steel Company; Katharine Elizabeth Higgins (born in Worcester, August 6, 1878), married in 1903 to R. Sanford Riley, President of the Riley-Stokes Company; and Olive Chapin Higgins, now Mrs. Lewis I. Prouty.
As a teacher, as the mother of four children, and the grandmother of thirteen, Mrs. Higgins has developed a practical outlook upon the problems of both parents and teachers. This has led her to identify herself with the modern parent-teachers movement. She has served as President of the Massachusetts State Parent-Teachers Association, and has been both Vice-President and President of the National Congress of Mothers and Parent-Teachers Associations. Since 1910 she has made many addresses throughout the country before parent-teacher associations and normal schools on child welfare. Religious education has also occupied her thoughts. She is the Superintendent of the Primary and Junior Departments of the Sunday School and is also the President of the Sunday School Teachers Primary Union of Worcester. Her interest in family history and her ability in research led to her appointment as State Historian for the Massachusetts Daughters of the American Revolution. She is the Regent of the Colonel Timothy Bigelow Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, Worcester, Massachusetts, a member of the Worcester Woman's Club, the Worcester Club, the Worcester Tatnuck Country Club, the Abbot Academy Club, and is President of the Woman's Auxiliary of the Worcester County Farm Bureau. In 1920 she was appointed one of ten delegates from the United States to the International Council of Women held in September, in Christiana, Norway. Mrs. Higgins has written many plays and exercises for the State Sunday School conventions, as well as poems for local occasions. Her most notable published work is the Higgins Genealogy (1919), a scholarly volume of over 900 pages.
