Arnold T. "Arnie" Carlson, 82, of South Wellfleet, and formerly of Pittsford, N.Y., died on Oct. 6. Arnie was predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Lois Lane (Stuart) Carlson in October 2006.

Born on Dec. 29, 1925, in Newton, he was the son of the late Theodore and Ida (Lindmark) Carlson of Sweden. Later moving to New York, he graduated from East Rochester High School in 1934. He graduated from Dartmouth Naval Academy, and attended the University of Pennsylvania. A WW II veteran, Arnie was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy and was stationed aboard the U.S.S. General Wm. Mitchell serving off the coasts of China, Japan, Guam and other areas of the South Pacific. He was a longtime member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

After the war, he returned to academics at St. Lawrence University, graduating with a BA in education in 1949 and completing his master's in education soon after. He taught high school English in Bombay, N.Y. and in the University of Buffalo summer program. He retired after 28 years as a teacher, athletic coach of basketball, track and cross country skiing, principal of Pittsford Sutherland and Mendon high schools, acting superintendent of schools and assistant to the superintendent for the Pittsford, N.Y. school district.

As an athlete he played Division 1 collegiate basketball and also semi-pro basketball for a number of years after college. He enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren \emdash a vital part of his life \emdash participate in athletics as well. He enjoyed watching Nauset High School games as well as those of local sports clubs. He was also a lifetime fan of the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots.

Arnie had the gift to play piano, guitar and harmonica by ear. He was also part of a barbershop quartet in upstate New York. He won several amateur photography awards, preferring to work in black-and-white. He had an offbeat sense of humor, and was widely known for his practical jokes.

After retirement in 1981, he and his wife made a permanent move to their home in South Wellfleet. Retirement was not idle; Arnie served as warden of voters, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Wellfleet Preschool and tutored many local youths in academics. He also advocated for elder, educational and children's issues. He was a generous donor and supporter to several local and national charities.

Surviving are his three children, Scott Dale (Stephen) Koziol, of Silver Springs, Md. and Myrtle Beach, S.C., Arnold Stuart Carlson, of Oahu, Hawaii, and Skye Lynne Green, of Brewster; 10 grandchildren, Susan S. (Michael) Kosmala, Jennifer L. (Matthew) McGuire, Jeremy S. Koziol, Ryan Damon, TyErik, Imani, Razz Tré, Angelique, Soleil and Tarris Green; and four great-grandchildren, Sage and Owen Kosmala, Ryan Dasan Green and Jordyn Green.

A service was held at Nickerson Funeral Home, Main Street, Wellfleet on Saturday. The interment of his and Lois's ashes in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers or cards, memorial donations in his name may be made to Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation, 2240 Iyannough Road, West Barnstable, MA 02668; Wellfleet Council on Aging, 715 Old King's Highway, Wellfleet, MA 02667; or Brewster After School Child Care Programs, P.O.
