Wolfgang Kurt Brueckner
Finish carpenter, formerly of Cape Cod
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Wolfgang Kurt Brueckner, 72, died Jan. 30 after a brief illness.
A child survivor of war-torn Germany in 1945, Mr. Brueckner received his business degree there before immigrating to the U.S. with his wife and son in 1964. After managing car dealerships for BMW, Mercedes Benz and Porsche throughout the eastern United States for eight years, Mr. Brueckner moved his family to Cape Cod in 1971. A resident of Brewster, East Orleans and North Eastham from 1971 to 1978, he worked as a finish carpenter for Kendrick Homes, Capewide Development Corp., and Cape Cod Stairs before starting his own firm.
He enjoyed fishing, the Cape’s many seascapes, and watching his sons play basketball at Nauset Regional High School. In 1980, he returned to his native West Germany where he worked as customer relations manager for the state electrical utility in Hanover while also caring for his aging parents as their only child.
After they died 20 years later, Mr. Brueckner returned to New England to be near his adult sons and grandchildren in 2001, before retiring to Indiana two years ago.
Mr. Brueckner is survived by two married sons, Thomas Brueckner of Merrimack, N.H., and Scottsdale, Ariz., and Stephan Brueckner of Concord; his ex-wife and best friend of 48 years, Elke Brueckner of North Eastham; and their six grandchildren ranging in age from 26 years to 4 months, two of whom serve in the United States military.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) in his name. A private family memorial service will be held as soon as his grandsons’ ability to attend (from Iraq and Japan) can be confirmed.

Col. Peter L. Brune, 65
Odenton, Md.
- Col. Peter L. Brune, Air Force retired, and a retired Westinghouse/Northrop-Grumman programs manager, 65, of Odenton, passed away Nov. 12, 2006, after a long battle with lung cancer. He was the husband of Pamela L. Brune.
Born and raised in Hyannis, he graduated from Barnstable High School in 1959, where he was a leader in both academics and athletics. He went on to graduate from Brandeis University in Waltham in 1963, again excelling both in sports and in the classroom.
Col. Brune began his 22-year Air Force career at Officer Training School at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, in September 1963, graduating with honors in December 1963. He was an aircraft maintenance officer and logistician, and led organizations at every level from flight lines at bases around the world to Air Force Headquarters in the Pentagon.
He served combat tours on Guam and in Thailand during the Vietnam War, and saw overseas duty in England as an exchange officer with the Royal Air Force. He was also assigned to every geographic region of the United States, and attended numerous Air Force and Military Service schools, including USAF Squadron Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., The Royal Air Force (RAF) Staff College at RAF Bracknell, England, and the U.S. National War College at Fort Leslie J. McNair in Washington, D.C.
His career was marked by accelerated promotion at every level and assignment to only the most critical and demanding positions. Col. Brune retired from the Air Force in October 1985, and joined the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Linthicum.
At Westinghouse, later to become Northrop-Grumman, ‘’Just Plain Pete’’ Brune, as he wanted to be known after his retirement from the Air Force, worked in the Airborne Early Warning (AEW) business area. This division produced the E-3 AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) radar, and Mr. Brune was quickly assigned to head a new Logistics Department for the division.
Rapid advancement also marked Mr. Brune’s career at Northrop-Grumman, and he soon moved on to head up all Production Programs, such as the Japanese 767 AWACS Program. Mr. Brune capped his career by taking over advanced AEW Development Programs, providing direction to a team that ultimately won the Australian Wedgetail competition, an effort which has resulted in the design and production of a new generation of modern AEW radar. Mr. Brune retired from Northrop-Grumman in June 2003.
Col. Brune was in a leadership role from his first days in the Air Force onward, and he certainly enjoyed this aspect of his professional life the most. While he was a recognized aircraft maintenance management and technical expert, he most loved people, and particularly enjoyed building successful organizations and developing and encouraging people to strive to be the best.
He was dedicated to his family. His early interest in sports carried over into family life and expanded into things the family could do together, like traveling, camping, sailing, skiing and golf. A boat owner for many years on the Chesapeake, he liked nothing better than to cruise the family sailboat to destinations both planned and undetermined, particularly if family and friends were involved. In the winter months, skiing was his passion, and he visited skiing venues all over the East, the West and Canada, again most often with family and friends. In later life, he and his wife also were able to travel widely, both to visit a spread-out family and to see new places all over the globe.
Besides his wife, Col. Brune is survived by a daughter, Lisa Randall of Alta Loma, Calif.; two sons, Michael Lastovic of Guntersville, Ala., and Craig Brune of Mt. Sinai, N.Y.; a stepson, Gregory Lowe of Odenton; and eight grandchildren.
A celebration of life memorial service was held at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Annapolis, Md.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401; or to the American Cancer Society.
