Notes
General:
Samuel is assigned to parents George & Mehitable Brown based on an assertion. I distinguish him from Samuel (b. 1656), based on the Eastham VR that seems to have that Samuel dying in 1691.
The Samuel Brown born 7 Nov 1690 to Samuel & Martha Brown would have been unusually young to marry in 1798, and seems to be the one who married Lydia Fish in 1717 (despit Langlois) 27

Notes
General:
"Samuel was eighteen when his father died in 1769. Because his father died without a will, his estate was divided as the law required: one third of the estate went to Samuel's mother; the other two thirds were divided among the children. As Samuel had seven siblings, his inheritance was probably small. He was, however, able to make a purchase of land in Maine, develop it, and work as a mariner. Samuel became a master mariner, as he was known in Orrington as Captain Samuel Brown."
According to the history of Orrington, Maine, Samuel was in residence prior to 1778. A Hancock County deed, dated 17 Feb 1802, shows Samuel Brown purchased 100 acres of land from John Brewer and Simon Fowler for about £95. According to The Orrington Maine Historical Society, the original land purchases were in 100 acre lots, and bought from Brewer and Fowler. The buyers were given three years to pay off the debt. Samuel's lot was numbered 15 in the original grant to Fowler and Brewer. On his original 100 acres, Samuel built a home and barns for his livestock. According to tax records, about seven acres of the 100 acres was developed. He also operated a store near the ferry landing.
Samuel had difficulties with the registration of his land due to problems protecting his land and livestock from British assaults during the Revolutionary War. The Orrington land situated on the northern bank of the Penobscot River was a very vulnerable place to live during the Revolutionary War. Castine, a major settlement at the mouth of the river, was taken by the British, allowing them to move along the river at will. The Continental Army did not provide much if any protection from the British and the colonists were ill equipped to defend the area alone. It wasn't until 1779 that an expedition [a major disaster] was sent to try and retake Castine. It is probable that this accounts for the discrepancies in the dates of his early land deeds. Samuel was unavailable when the representative from the State of Massachusetts came to register the land in 1802, and had to petition the State for official title to his land in 1803.
David Swett has transcribed 1823 tax records, which show Samuel owned $250 in Orrington real estate, with 7 acres developed with buildings, and 50 acres wild.
