Cape man fights whalers
By Doug Fraser
STAFF WRITER
April 09, 2008 6:00 AM
EASTHAM — The walls of Peter Brown's home practically bristle with spears, handmade arrows, poisonous darts and blowguns: trophies from a lifetime of television and film work in exotic locales covering news and the environment.
Brown's latest souvenir is one he'd rather not have: a badly broken thumb, the bones held together with strips of titanium.
His thumb was pinched between a cable and the side of his vessel this winter when he was chasing Japanese whalers in the seas off Antarctica with the activist environmental group Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
"They tell me I'll have movement," Brown said hopefully, looking down at the swollen sausage of a thumb.
The 56-year-old Eastham native is a television producer, cinematographer and cameraman who has volunteered for Sea Shepherd for 26 years. He was the first mate on the Sea Shepherd vessel MV Steve Irwin in January, when two of its crewmen boarded a Japanese whaling vessel without permission and were held on the ship for two days.
The drama will be part of a show called "Whale Wars" on the Animal Planet cable network this fall.
Though the incident began when someone from a Japanese whaling vessel allegedly shot Paul Watson, the Sea Shepherd's controversial founder, it only became a "hostage" situation, Brown admits, when he turned the Steve Irwin around and left the scene so the Japanese would be forced to hold the two crewmen longer.
"It's all giant street theater," Brown said.
That's a concept familiar to Watson, who was unharmed because he was wearing a bulletproof vest. Watson helped start Greenpeace in 1972, resigning five years later when the agency repudiated his "direct action" tactics that included a game of "chicken" with a French helicopter carrier to protest French nuclear testing in the South Pacific.
With Sea Shepherd, whose three ships are painted black and fly under pirate flags, Watson could go all out.
It's a notion that appealed to Brown, filmed a television segment on Watson in 1982 and was impressed by his efforts to stop unlawful fishing, habitat destruction and the killing of whales, dolphins and seals.
"I like people who believe in what they do," Brown said.
News reports blame Sea Shepherd with sinking or scuttling nine ships and say Watson has been jailed, harassed and fired upon by foreign navies and the U.S. Coast Guard.
"What we do is show," Brown said. "We make it an issue, so that the big people can come in to close it down."
It's an approach that caught the attention of Animal Planet, a network whose programming includes dog shows, pet rescues and nature education series.
"This was emblematic of a new perspective from a strong, different point of view," said Animal Planet spokeswoman Patricia Kollappallil. She said her viewers want more programming on animal conservation.
Conservation in action is what they are going to see from the Sea Shepherd footage. The encounters with the Japanese whaling vessels were particularly provocative this year, with Sea Shepherd crewmen throwing beer bottles filled with butyric acid onto the Japanese ships.
Found in rancid butter, cheese and vomit, the acid's smell is powerful and lingering.
Still, the alleged shooting surprised Watson, Brown and the crew, Brown said, because the Japanese are usually not aggressive, preferring to leave rather than fight.
"They're afraid of us," Brown said of the whalers. "They don't know what we'll do."
Over at Greenpeace, 31 years after Watson left, the organization still wants to put distance between itself and him.
"We have a different definition of nonviolence than they do," said John Hocevar, an oceans specialist with Greenpeace in Washington D.C.
But Hocevar agreed that showmanship is the ultimate weapon when it comes to saving the whales.
"It's the attention that it is going to bring on the larger stage that has the potential to change it."
