Notes
General:
About 1714, Shubael moved to Tolland, CT, of which he was the town clerk.
About 1750, with his sons and daughters and their families, he left Tolland on
account of ecclesiastical difficulties, and settled near Newbern, SC. He and
his family were Baptists and some of them have exercised a great influence
upon the religious sentiments of the South. Their residence in NC was at a
place called "Pepper Cotton" and a pamphlet was published at the time giving
an account of the troubles in Tolland, CT. After moving to the South, the
broad Southern pronunciation was given to the name and it has since been
generally written and pronounced STARNES. [Source: Van Wagenen Volumes, p.
41.]

(per BRYAN DUCHESNE) - No record of his marriage has been discovered but
records have indicated that "Mary Upton, of Reading, Mass., md. Shubael
Stearns, of Lynn". Whether this Shubael or a descendant is unknown. Testimony
of Samuel Trail, aged 95 years and upwards; remembers Shubael Stearns of Lynn,
who came from Watertown and was in the army. Shubael's will is dated, Nov. 19,
1733; proved Sept. 2, 1734; nine children. Settled in Lynn, probably near the
border of Reading. He belonged to the Narragansett Expedition.

Parents of Amherst, NH.
In company with his brother, Isaac, and their mother, he located at Littleton,
NH, in the first decade of the century, where his first ten children were
born, three of whom died in infancy without a name. In Feb., 1828, he moved
to Newport, VT, where he died. It is said of him that he was a man of good
judgment and strictly honest; that he was never drawn into a lawsuit, either
as plaintiff or defendant; that he died as he had lived, an earnest, devoted,
Christian. They were buried, with six of their children, where a beautiful
monument of Scotch granite has been erected to their memory. They had
thirteen children.

Birth also reported as Lynn, MA.
A Baptist preacher of such eloquence and vigor that he was styled Boanerges,
Son of Thunder. In 1745, he joined the followers of George Whitfield, who
were called the "Church of New Lights". In 1751, his attention was called to
the question of baptism and he was immersed by Rev. Wait Palmer at Tolland,
CT. and in 1754, accompanied by his parents and other friends, he set out
for Virginia.
His first stop was at Opeckoa, Berkeley Co., VA. Then he went with his
brother-in-law, Rev. Daniel Marshall about thirty miles from Winchester, VA.
Afterward he settled permanently at Sandy Creek, NC where in a few years, his
little church grew from a membership of sixteen to six hundred and six.
He was no ordinary man but eminently successful in persuading men to accept
and serve Jesus. In stature, small but with a peculiarly penetrating eye and
a very musical voice.
He died Nov 20, 1771 after much suffering dying as he had lived in simple,
confident reliance upon the love of God. The influence of his great work
still lives throughout the regions where he faithfully preached, as a pioneer,
the simple story of salvation by faith.
