Painting the Image of Old Cape Cod
By Jim Coogan
Barnstable Patriot 2005
Joseph C. Lincoln is often given credit for creating the literary image of traditional Cape Cod. In his many novels, Lincoln portrayed the Cape as the quintessential rural seaside American model, populated by honest, hardworking, and common sense type folks.
For the millions of early 20th century readers who followed Lincoln’s popular stories, his character development spoke to the values that they came to see as “Cape Cod.”
Along with Lincoln’s literary imagery, were the illustrators who created the covers and pictures that supported his “homely heroes.” There were a large number of these, including such notables as Edward Kemble, Walt Lauderbeck, Thomas Fogarty, and Mead Schaeffer. Over a half century, some sixty artists contributed to Lincoln’s prodigious volume of works. But perhaps the one illustrator who came to symbolize in pictures what Lincoln created in text was Harold Matthews Brett.
Brett was not a native Cape Codder but was born close enough in nearby Middleboro to be very aware of the area’s special character. His mother was Emma Snow of Harwich so his familial connections to the Cape were strong. On her side he was connected to Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower. Later, when he had achieved fame as an illustrator, he cemented these roots by moving to North Chatham where he purchased and renovated the old Joshua Atkins house on Old Harbor Road. He divided his time between Chatham and his Ipswich Street studio in Boston.
Revealing an early talent as an artist, and encouraged by his parents, Brett enrolled in a Museum of Fine Arts drawing program after high school. He was instructed by Philip Hall and Frank Benson. From there he entered the Arts Students’ League of New York City. As he further honed his skills, he took courses at the Howard Pyle School in Wilmington, Delaware, a place where he later opened his first studio. In the immediate years before World War I, Brett had already made his mark as an illustrator in publications such as the Ladies Home Journal, Colliers, McClures, and the Saturday Evening Post. Lincoln, who was also featured in these national magazines, was drawn to Brett, both because of his style and also for his connections to the Cape. Lincoln had punched a number of the same tickets in achieving fame in popular literature and was himself by then, a Chatham resident. In 1915, Brett did the first of a number of cover illustrations for Lincoln in Thankful’s Inheritance. When they did Cape Cod Yesterdays, Brett was given equal billing with Lincoln. Such was his reputation and his personal connection to the writer who defined for America what Cape Cod was.
With their shared love of golf at Eastward Ho! country club, there was a natural fit between the two men. They became social friends and often fished together around Chatham, Harwich, and Brewster. Brett claimed that several of Lincoln’s stories were conceived and developed as the two men sat in Brett’s Chatham studio. “I try to do in my paintings what Joe Lincoln did in his books,” he once said in summing up their relationship. “We both must have wanted to preserve the old time atmospher of the Cape.” One of the better examples of the historic eye that both men had may be seen in the cover of Lincoln’s Christmas Days. The wonderful captain’s house that is the centerpiece of the picture was near Lincoln’s birthplace home in Brewster. Obviously, he took Brett to see it and it was reproduced faithfully to create the setting for the family homestead. It was not the first nor the last time that this collaboration would effectively capture and promote the traditional image of Cape Cod.
In the 1920s and in following decades, Brett increasingly turned to portrait painting. It proved a steady bread winner for him in the hard years of the 1930s. He became a “society painter” and did commission work for the wealthy and powerful. One of his first important pieces was a portrait of Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York. Others included the presidents of Harvard, M.I. T., and Andover Academy. He also did a portrait of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Wiley Rutledge. Perhaps the best image of the mature Joe Lincoln was Brett’s 1943 portrait of the author which hangs in the Atwood House, the headquarters of the Chatham Historical Society.
But Brett continued to enjoy doing works related to the Cape. If it was not something for Lincoln, or a local bank president, he could take on a simple series of sketches for the Nickerson Lumber Company’s annual give away calendars. Perhaps because he never stopped being an illustrator, his reputation – in much the same way it affected his contemporary, Norman Rockwell, never gained the status of America’s master artists. Curiously, Lincoln also was never considered a major figure in American literature, and like Brett, he is assigned to the second tier of American writers. Despite the wide popularity enjoyed by both men, their respective efforts were somehow seen as “tainted” in the eyes of purists. Neither Lincoln nor Brett seemed to care all that much about these evaluations and were satisfied to paint and write for the masses who supported them enthusiastically.
Harold Brett died in January of 1956 at age 75. He was buried a short distance from his friend, Joe Lincoln, in the Union Cemetery in Chatham.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Harold Mathews Brett is known for his illustrations and paintings of nostalgic New England scenes. He grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts, and studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under Philip Hale and Frank Benson. Later, he moved to New York to study at the Art Students League with Walter Appleton Clark, H. Siddons Mowbray, and Kenyon Cox.

Hyannis Patriot 8 Apr 1918, p1
Timothy Smith, for more than a half century one of the most widely lnown dry goods men in Boston, died Sunday 31st, from cerebral hemorrhage. His wife, Mrs. Mary Ellen (Brett) Smith, survived him only by a half hour, death resulting from shock probably brought on by the sudden realization that her husband was dying. Mr. and Mrs. Smith recently observed the 60th anniversary of their marriage.
Mr. Smith was a native of Eastham, where he was born May 28, 1835, the son of Timothy and Ruth Freeman (Knowles) Smith.
In 1913 Mr. Smith presented a fine Town hall to his native town of Eastham.
