Murder in the Mills
By HILARY RUSS
STAFF WRITER
BARNSTABLE - They were former friends and classmates, but yesterday one of them was indicted for the October murder of the other after an apparent teenage love triangle collapsed.
Alexander Phillips, 19, of Marstons Mills, was indicted by a grand jury in Barnstable Superior Court on murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charges. He is accused of stabbing to death Anthony Rano, 19, of South Yarmouth.
Rano and Phillips both attended Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich. The two were friendly until Rano's girlfriend began dating Phillips.
Last fall, after the woman and Phillips argued in the basement apartment they shared on Cammett Way in Marstons Mills. The woman called Rano, who said he would drive to the apartment, according to police reports.
She warned Rano that Phillips had a knife - a commando-style 8-inch blade - but he came anyway. Police later found Rano bleeding in the street near the Cammett Way home after the woman called 911. They found blood in and outside Rano's black Vokswagen Jetta down the street and the knife above a ceiling tile in Phillips' apartment nearby.
Police believe Phillips hid behind a stone wall and waited for Rano, who died from stab wounds to his neck, arm and torso a few hours after the alleged attack.
An arraignment date for Phillips has yet to be set.
Phillips is being held in the Barnstable County Correctional Facility in Bourne without bail.
