Notes
General:
Father: James Bean b: 17 DEC 1672 in Exeter, Rockingham, New Hampshire
Mother: Sarah Bradley b: 19 AUG 1673 in Haverhill, Massachusetts

"Benjamin ... was a seaman, and was a man of some property at one time, but which he lost with the loss of a ship at sea. He was returning from a voyage to his home at Exeter in a small boat which he had taken at Portsmouth, and had his son Benjamin with him, then only nine years of age. When within a few miles of home, he fell out of his boat (it capsized) and was drowned in Exeter River. After his death, his widow married Jeremy (Jeremiah) Bean, (his first cousin) and had children.

[Mehitable], who afterwards married Jeremy Bean, was much celebrated in her times for her courage, judgment, perseverance, and piety. She was Mehitable Mahew (Mayo), from Cape Cod, and had by her first husband (Benjamin) seven or eight children, four at two births within fifteen months.

from "Edward Baker of Lynn MA" by Nelson Baker, 1867

Benjamin ... was grandson of John Bean of Exeter and first cousin of Jeremy who m. his widow. John of Exeter was a Scotsman captured at the Battle of Worcester during Cromwell's English Civil Wars and brought to Boston on the 'John and Sara' in 1652 to be sold into indentured servitude. He was bought by Nicholas Lissen, a fellow Scotsman and saw mill owner in Exeter where he put John to work. After just several years John won his freedom and married Nicholas' daughter, Hannah, who died after bearing three children. John then married Margaret, said to be from Scotland. Early tradition possibly often omitted their ancestor's prisoner of war status, as they had often struggled make their way as equal citizens among the English-Puritan society."
And so there was the family fable in Baker 1867: [Benjamin was] "one of two brothers who emigrated to Massachusetts not long after the landing of the Pilgrams one of whom married an Irish girl under the following circumstances. She could not pay her passage and so had to be sold. As he wanted a house-keeper, he bought her and paid for her in staves; and he was so well pleased with her that he married her, and had by her children, whose descendants (though not embracing Capt. Bean) are now very numerous and respectable." 30
