"Elisha Paine ... was a member of King Hiram's Lodge, he was captain of the vessel REFORM in the October Gale of 1841. All hands being fastened below in the cabin, Paine went up on deck to put a drag out to keep head to the wind. Soon after a terrific sea capsized the ship, rolling it completely over until it came upright again. Two crew members crawled out on the deck to discover that the masts were gone, and the hawser of the drag was wound around the bowsprit. Elisha Paine had been washed away during the incident."

Elisha was among the 57 Truro men and boys lost, on 7 vessels, in the October Gale of 1841. 31
