Passage to America, 17 JUN 1635 Massachusets Bay, aboard the ship Abigaill under Robert Hackwell, Master
During the Indian wars William Bassett was an ensign in Captain Gardner's company from nearby Salem. Later he became a captain. For his services in this capacity he was awarded by the General Court a grant of three acres 128 poles of land. In Lynn and Essex County records he was called "Quartermaster."

He served many times on the jury for trials in the Quarterly Court, was a constable of Lynn, a selectman, and was among those citizens who signed for the purchase of land from the Indians in 1686. In 1689 he was a member of the Council of War with Major Benjamin Church of Scarborough, Maine.

He was b. abt. 1595-1600; was a gunsmith and worker in metals by occupation. He res. in Plymouth until abt. 1650 when he rem. to Duxbury and afterward rem.
to Bridgewater abt. 1655. He m. (1) Elizabeth ( ) and (2) Mrs. Mary (Tilden) Lapham (wid. of Thomas) , who was bapt. 20 May 1610 at Tenterden, co. Kent, the dau. of Nathaniel Tilden. His will 5 Apr. 1667 was pro. 5 June 1667 and he d. between those dates. Only the direct line of the Vineyard branch is given here and it will be noted that it became a distinguished one in the annals of the island. 7
