"Rev. Nathan4 Bassett, (Nathan,3 William2,1), b. 14 Feb. 1700-01. He was sent by his father to H. C. and was graduated in the class of 1719 and was thus prepared to enter the ministry, a vocation which he followed with distinguished ability and marked success. In 1724 he was called by the "Circular" Church (so-called) of Charleston, S. C, an invitation which he accepted and the pastorate of which he held for fourteen years until death cut off prematurely a most promising career. Through a friendship formed in college with Rev. Joshua Smith of Charleston he was received as an honored guest into the family of his college mate, the wealthy and celebrated Landgrave Smiths of South Carolina. As a result he married his friend's sister, Mary Smith, dau. of Dr. George and Dorothy (Archer) Smith of Charleston, abt. 1730. He died 26 June 1738 of smallpox, and a large mural tablet with a Latin inscription testifying to his virtues and work was placed in the walls of the church where he preached. His brother-inlaw, who delivered the funeral sermon, which was published, succeeded him in the pastorate. His wid. m. (2) John Dart, Esq., of Charleston 16 Apr. 1744.

will of her grandfather, Nathan (25). She m. John Edwards." 5

Notes
General:
"The Progenitor of the Bassetts of Chatham and Harwich. Settled in Monomoit (now Chatham) shortly after marrying. A notation in the Proprietor's Book of Records describes his property which he bought. The entry was probably made in 1714. His land lay near the present Chatham/Harwich boundary south of Queen Anne Rd. and between Mill Pond and Ministers Pond."Marriage Notes (Mary Crowell)
A possible alt birth place is Sandwich.
"He is the progenitor of the Bassetts of Harwich and Chatham. He settled in Monomoit about 1711, just before it was renamed Chatham. An entry in the Proprietors Book of Records of Chatham, probably from 1714, describes land he bought as "laid out to Nathan Bassett a parcell of land to ye westward of ye Indian Meeting House, bounded east by ye land left for ye Indian Meeting House, north by a highway to a tree marked on four sides, with N.B. cut into it; thence sets S.W. to ye pond next Harwich then by ye pond to a range set between ye pond to ye other pond, and then by it to ye first mentioned land, allowing a highway through between ye ponds" (Josiah Paine manuscripts, p. 84, NEHGS). The land lies on the Chatham-Harwich boundary south of Queen Anne Road near West Harwich. The ponds are now called Mill Pond and Ministers Pond. He bought an interst in common land from one of the Covells (probably Joseph), and settled on the part of it on the south side of the road to Yarmouth, opposite the farm of Joseph Nickerson. In the 1713 division of common land he had all the land between the ponds and the road, from the Indian meeting house nearly to Harwich line, assigned to him. His estate was not settled when he died, and the property was disposed of in his wife's 1741 will, going to sons Nathaniel and Samuel." (alex1136) 8

Notes
General:
"Although religious, he left the established church and joined the "Separatists", or "New Lights", which later became the "Baptists". In 1749 he signed a petition asking that those not belonging to the established church should not have to pay taxes for its support. In 1755 the citizens of Chatham decided that its five residents, including Nathaniel, that did not belong to the established church, should still pay taxes for the ministry. A few years later the practice was abolished and he appeared on the list of those not required to pay." (alex1136)
