HYANNIS \emdash Edwin W. Taylor died in Hyannis, September 1, 2010.
Born at the family homestead on Stage Harbor Road on September 29, 1913, Edwin was the youngest of four children born to Winthrop Taylor and his Danish wife, Hansina Christiansen. Edwin attended the Atwood School, a one-room schoolhouse on the corner of Cedar Street. He graduated from Chatham High School in 1931.
As a young man, Edwin enjoyed an outdoor life (particularly duck hunting and surf fishing) when not at work for Nickerson Lumber Company (now Mid-Cape Home Centers) where he had been hired at age 16 by the company founder, Captain Oscar Nickerson.
Edwin received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army on November 2, 1945, at the end of World War II having risen to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. As a member of the famed Americal Division, he saw 4 years of combat duty in the South Pacific, including Guadalcanal and Bougainville, and received military honors including the Bronze Star for valor.
After the war, Edwin returned to work with Nickerson Lumber Company, managing their Wellfleet lumber yard. In 1947, Edwin married Mary Elizabeth Walsh, also of Chatham. They made their home in Wellfleet until 1960 when they returned to one of the Taylor family homes to raise their four children. With other returning veterans, he was instrumental in founding the Chatham VFW.
After 47 years with Nickerson's, Edwin retired from his position as site supervisor with Mid-Cape Homes, a division he was instrumental in establishing back in the 1960s. He remained active in town by serving on several local committees including the Chatham Planning Board, Architectural Advisory Committee and Board of Appeals.
Edwin was predeceased in June 2001 by his wife of 54 years and in 1955 by an infant son, Marcus Paine Taylor. Survivors include sons Winthrop E. Taylor of Prosser, WA, Seth T. Taylor of Branford, Conn., Peter W. Taylor of Chatham, and a daughter, Mary Jane (Taylor) Rixon of Centerville. Grandchildren include Ephraim A. Taylor, Isaac F. Taylor, Thomasina M. Taylor, Abigail B. Taylor, Jared G. Taylor, Marjorie K. Taylor, Patricia L. Taylor, Matthew W. Taylor, Emma Taylor Rixon and great-grandson, Quincy Taylor.
A graveside service will be held at People's Cemetery in Chatham at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 11. In lieu of flower, donations may be made the Chatham VFW.
