Clifford Bates Taylor, 93, died on Thursday (27 Apr) in Centerville. He was predeceased by his wife, the late Gladys (Prada) Taylor, who passed away in 1996. They were married for 63 years. He was also predeceased by his grandson Randy Bates Taylor, who died in 1965 at the age of two.
Born and raised in Wellfleet, he attended Wellfleet High School. Mr. Bates then served in the Coast Guard from 1935 to 1947 at both the Cahoon Hallow and the Wood End stations. He then managed Preston's Camp & Cottage, Anchor & Ark Guest House and Higgins Lumber.
Retiring to Hyannis in 1984, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid Red Sox fan. He was extremely fond of his sons' two horses, especially "Whine," and the two dogs "Sugar" and "Lilly."
He is survived by one son, Clifford J. Taylor of W. Yarmouth; three grandchildren, Cheryl Manella, Steven C. Taylor and Darryl J. Taylor; 10 great-grandchildren, Victoria E. (Taylor) Butler, Katelyn M. Taylor, Nina V. Manella, Amanda M. Taylor, Alyssa A. Taylor, Diamond C. Taylor, Justin Bates Taylor, Nicholas T. Manella, Colt Jon Taylor and Luke James Taylor; plus his care-giver, Cindy Cash.
A graveside service was held May 2 in the Pine Grove Cemetery, South Yarmouth. Arrangements were by Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St., Hyannis.
