Lifelong Chatham resident

CHATHAM — Marlene J. (Bassett) Devlin, 72, died March 17 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. She was the wife of Gerard Devlin.

Mrs. Devlin was born in Barnstable, raised and educated in Chatham. She graduated from Chatham High School and attended Chandler Business School.
A lifelong Chatham resident, she enjoyed her family summer cottage in Woodstock, Maine.

Mrs. Devlin worked in various jobs during her life: waitress, bookkeeper at Chatham Trust Co., delivered mail, retail, and most recently assisted at the Chatham Cemetery Office. She is a past member of the Monomoy branch of the Hospital Aid, a member of Pythian Crytarian Temple, and a member of Bayberry Quilters. She enjoyed reading, theater, sewing and quilting.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Gerald Jr. of Sandwich, Bruce of Mashpee and Steve of North Chatham; her siblings, Roland Kelley of Chatham, Kathleen LaPlant of Eastham and Christine Basset of Rumford, Maine; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Lester.

Visiting hours will be held at Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham, today from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home tomorrow, March 22, at 11 a.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Chatham Rescue Squad, c/o Fire Dept. Assoc., Depot Street, Chatham, MA 02633.
