Biography of Philip Taber from: Henry Howland Crapo, Certain Comeoverers, Vol. I (New Bedford, MA: E. Anthony & Sons, 1912), pp. 307-313:
Philip Tabor may be designated as your "migratory comeoverer." Most of your comeoverers, after a brief period of vacillation "sat down" and stayed put. It was not so with Philip Tabor. Whence he came I know not. He was probably born in England about 1605. He may have come over with Winthrop in 1630 and settled first at Boston. His (Winthrop) was evidently a nature which could permit no "pent up Utica" to contract his powers, even if he did not go to the extreme of making the "whole boundless continent his." In the case of Philip Tabor, however, there is nothing shady about him except his conduct. So far as his personality is concerned, it is singularly distinct. He was in no sense an important individual in the history of New England, and yet he succeeded in projecting his personality rather more vividly than most of your ancesters. Philip Tabor was admitted a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony October 19, 1630. On May 14, 1634, he was admitted a freeman of Watertown. He was a carpenter and builder, and must have come to New England with some capital as well as skill in his trade. He was one of the original contributors to a floating fort to protect Boston, 1633-4. "Upon consideration of the usefulness of a moving fort to be built forty feet long and twenty-one wide, for the defense of this colony, and upon the free offer of some gentlemen lately come over to us of some large sums of money to be employed that way" the Court asked for further subscriptions. The record shows that Philip Tabor was among the gentlemen who had already subscribed by offering to give two hundred four-inch planks, a substantial and useful donation. In Watertown he was the proprietor of five lots which he sold to John Wolcot. Here he married Lydia, the daughter of John Masters, with whom very probably he was associated in construction work. What caused him to remove to Yarmouth we cannot know. It is quite likely that there was an opportunity there for him as a builder. He was propounded as a freeman of Plymouth Colony, January 7, 1638-9, and was admitted June 4, 1639. That he should have served the same year as a Deputy for Yarmouth to the first General Court at Plymouth is a striking example of his forcefulness in impressing others with his ability. In March 1639, he was one of a committee to make division of the planting lands at Yarmouth. In 1640, he again represented Yarmouth at the General Court. On October 4, 1640, as appear ...

Marriage Notes (Deacon John Jackson)
JACKSON, Dea. JOHN, was bap. in the Parish of Stepney, London, June 6, 1602 ; the first settler of Camb. Village, who remained and d. in it. He brought a good estate with him, from England. He bought a dwelling house and eighteen acres of land, of Miles Ives, of Wat., in 1639. This estate was situated on the Rox. road, very near the line which now divides Newton from Brighton. He took the Freeman's oath, in 1641, - was one of the first Deacons of the Church, gave one acre of land for the Church and burial place, upon which the first M. H. was erected, in 1660, and which is now the oldest part of the Centre Cemetery. He was the s. of Christopher Jackson, of London, who was buried on the 5th of Dec. 1633*. He had, in this country, by two wives, five sons and ten daughters, and at the time of his decease, about fifty grandchildren.
There may have been, and probably were, some transient dwellers in the Village, before he came, but they were not known to the record, and left no descendants there. The coming of John Jackson, in 1639, may properly he considered the first settlement of Newton. He d. Jan. 30, 1674-5. Counting from the record of his baptism, in England, his ago was 73.* How old he was when baptised, is uncertain. He left an estate, valued at £1,230. His widow Margaret d. Aug. 28 1684, ae. 60. (Gravestone.) She could not, therefore, have been the mother of his s. John, who was born in 1639. His old mansion house was pulled down about 1800; it stood on the same spot now occupied by Edwin Smallwood's new dwelling house. The old pear trees now standing there, are supposed to have been planted by his s. Abraham, who also gave one acre of land adjoining that given by his father, for the Church and burial place; which two acres now form the ancient part of the Centre Cemetery. He was a proprietor of the Cambridge lands. In the division of 1662, he had three acres ; in 1664, he had twenty acres. In the division of the Billerica lands, in 1652, he had fifty acres. He left eight hundred and sixty-three acres of land. His estate was settled by agreement, among the surviving children, in Dec. 1676. His brother Edward Jackson, Thomas Prentice, Isaac Williams, and Joseph Tayntor, appraised the estate. He had labored long and earnestly, by petitioning the General Court, and otherwise, to have Camb. Village erected into an independent town, but did not live to see it accomplished.
He had by a former w., John, 1639, and perhaps others. By w. Margaret,
