TRURO - William Manuel Sylvester, 51, died April 18 after fighting a courageous battle against cancer. He was the husband of Jan Worthington of Truro.
Mr. Sylvester was born and raised in Provincetown and was proud to call himself a "West Ender." From the time he was a small boy he climbed into fishermen's dories and tried to get them to take him on a trip. He loved to fish and it became his life's work.
When not fishing commercially out of places such as New Bedford, Chatham, Alaska and Provincetown, he could be found on Gull Pond fishing for trout or on his boat, the Jani Girl, fishing off Race Point for bass. A natural and expert cook who never used a recipe, he made huge seafood feasts for friends and family with an ease and grace that were incomparable.
A big, lion-hearted man with a generous soul, Mr. Sylvester was passionate as fire, sometimes full of hot air, a lover of the earth and most at home on the water. He had a devoted allegiance to those he loved.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, Myrtle Rose Sylvester of Provincetown; a brother, Frank X. Gaspar of Long Beach, Calif.; his nieces, Jessica Franklin, Anabel Franklin and Carla Kachadurian; his nephews, Spencer Brennan, Carson Brennan, Derek Kachadurian, Kyle Kachadurian and Aidan Kinsella; his former companion, Faye Freeman Perry and her children Danielle Freeman of Provincetown and Eric Freeman of Brewster.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, April 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at McHoul's Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown.

Bernard E. Sylvia, 72, of Truro, formerly of Provincetown, died on Tuesday, June 20, at Cape Cod Hospital following a brief illness.
Although he was born in Truro, Mr. Silvia lived most of his life in Provincetown. For many years he worked part-time at Duarte’s Motors in Provincetown and Duarte's Package Store in Truro. Mr. Sylvia retired in 1995 from the Provincetown Post Office where he worked for 20 years as a letter carrier. He also served in the Air Force, retiring after 21 years in 1973 with the rank of Tec. Sergeant.
Mr. Sylvia is survived by three children, Albert Prada of Boston, Stephen Prada of Truro and Joy Armey of Lecanto, Fla.; five grandchildren, Allan, Adam and Albert Prada, all of Boston, and Sophia and Gianna Armey of Lecanto, Fla.; and his sister, Beverly Abercrombie of Kentucky. He was the husband of the late Elisa Prada Sylvia, who died in 2005, and the brother of the late Cliff, Fred, William and Nancy Sylvia.
A mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown. Burial was at the V.A. National Cemetery in Bourne.
Arrangements are through the McHoul Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown. Donations in his memory may be made to the Fund for St. Peter’s, c/o St. Peter’s Church, 11 Prince St., Provincetown, MA 02657.

Sylvia was the husband of Gertrude (Galvin) Sylvia.
He attended Dennis and Yarmouth schools, played in the Cape Cod Baseball League, and served in World War II.
Besides his wife, Mr. Sylvia is survived by his six children: Sheila Sylvia; Patricia Sylvia-Gonsalves and her husband, Bob; and Francis Sylvia, all of South Dennis; Richard E. Sylvia and his companion, Lynda Gannon, of Harwich; Mark Sylvia and his wife, Anne, of Cotuit; and Brian Sylvia and his wife, Laurie, of Syracuse, N.Y; his grandchildren, Jeffrey Sylvia and his wife, Kate, Amy Fiumara and her husband, Michael, Morgan Sylvia, Corey Gipson, Zeely, Carmen and Mia Sylvia, Marissa Makris and Cameron Sylvia; his great-grandchildren, Jada and Dante Gipson and Emily Sylvia; his siblings, Mary E. Sylvia and Rose Luedeker of South Dennis; Lena Almeida of New Bedford; and his brother, Joseph Sylvia, of Lake Placid, Fla.
Mr. Sylvia was preceded in death by his brothers Jack and Gus Sylvia and his sisters Jennie Fernandes and Catherine Fernandes.
Visiting hours were Feb. 14 at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was held Feb. 15 at Holy Trinity Church in West Harwich.
