William Pierce Stubbs was born in Orrington, Maine, in 1842. He was the son of a shipmaster, and he was probably master of his father's ship from 1863-73. By 1871 he painted what is likely his first ship portrait, and by 1876 he was listed as a marine painter in the Boston city directory. While there, Stubbs shared a studio with Wesley Webber. Later, he had studios in Boston, and Charlestown where it is likely that Badger was his student.
Following the deaths of his wife and daughter he sank into a deep depression and was committed first to the Worcester State Hospital and then to the Medfield State Hospital where he died in 1909.
American. Born 1842, Bucksport, Maine. Son of Captain Reuben Stubbs. No formal training. Listed Boston directories 1876 as painter, 1877 marine artist. 1882 lived in Charlestown with studio in Boston. At the International Maritime Exhibition, Boston, 1890, his paintings priced from $25.00 to $500.00. After 1887 developed melancholia; 1894 committed to Worcester State Hospital. Died 15 May 1909, Medfield, Massachusetts.
