HARWICH--Donald L. "Jack" Stacy of Harwich, age 77, died at his home Jan. 8, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Mary Brennan.

Mr. Stacy was born in Barnstable, the son of Louis Stacy and Esther Eldridge Stacy. He was raised in Chatham and was a 1950 graduate of Chatham High School. A true Cape Codder, his family history dates back many generations in Chatham.

He had a distinguished military career, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1954 during the Korean Conflict. He served his country as a U.S. Coast Guard reservist for more than 23 years, including posts as acting Chief at the Coast Guard stations in Chatham and Provincetown. Mr. Stacy was awarded the Coast Guard Achievement Medal for superior performance of duty in 1986. In 1990, he was named the USCG Reservist of the Year by the Navy League of the United States, Massachusetts Bay Council. Prior to retiring from the Coast Guard in 1991, he served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

He spent much of his career as a Boat Captain. He retained a US Coast Guard captain's license and piloted many vessels on Cape Cod as well as down the east coast to Florida and the Caribbean. One of those voyages was featured in a Yachting Magazine article published in 1972.

During the 1960's, Mr. Stacy managed the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank in Chatham. He served on the Chatham Finance Committee and was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed boating, gardening and family.

Besides his wife, he his is survived by his sister, Cora Greco of Chatham; two nephews; and two grandnieces. He also had two stepdaughters, Kate Gallivan of Philadelphia, Pa., Ellen Duffy-Peterson of Harwich; and two step grandchildren.

A graveside service was Jan. 12 at Seaside Cemetery Chatham. Memorial donations may be made to the Coast Guard Heritage Museum, P.O. Box 161 Barnstable, MA 02630.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Stafford,_3rd_Duke_of_Buckingham

Edward Stafford, born 3 February 1478 at Brecon Castle in Wales, was the eldest son of Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, and Katherine Woodville, the daughter of Richard Woodville, 1st Earl Rivers, by Jacquetta of Luxembourg, daughter of Pierre de Luxembourg, Count of St. Pol, and was thus a nephew of King Edward IV.[1]
In October 1483 Stafford's father participated in a rebellion against King Richard III. He was beheaded without trial on 2 November 1483, whereby all his honours were forfeited. Stafford is said to have been hidden in various houses in Herefordshire at the time of the rebellion, and perhaps for the remainder of Richard III's reign. However after Richard III's defeat at Bosworth on 22 August 1485, and King Henry VII's accession to the crown, Stafford was made a Knight of the Order of the Bath on 29 October 1485 as Duke of Buckingham, and attended Henry VII's coronation the following day, although his father's attainder was not formally reversed by Parliament until November. The young Duke's wardship and lands were granted, on 3 August 1486, along with the wardship of his younger brother, Henry Stafford, to the King's mother, Margaret Beaufort, and according to Davies it is likely Buckingham was educated in her various households.[6]
...
In 1488 Henry VII had suggested a marriage between Buckingham and Anne of Brittany, but in December 1489 the executors of Henry Percy, 4th Earl of Northumberland paid the King £4000 for Buckingham's marriage to Percy's eldest daughter Eleanor (d. 1530). They had a son and three daughters:[17]
...
Buckingham, with his Plantagenet blood and numerous connections by descent or marriage with the rest of the aristocracy, became an object of Henry's suspicion. During 1520, Buckingham became suspected of potentially treasonous actions and Henry VIII authorised an investigation. The King personally examined witnesses against him, gathering enough evidence for a trial. The Duke was finally summoned to Court in April 1521 and arrested and placed in the Tower. He was tried before a panel of 17 peers, being accused of listening to prophecies of the King's death and intending to kill the King; however, the King's mind appeared to be decided and conviction was certain. He was executed on Tower Hill on 17 May. Buckingham was posthumously attainted]] by Act of Parliament on 31 July 1523.[14]

Stafford was the son of Humphrey Stafford of Blatherwycke, in Northamptonshire, and his wife, Margaret, the daughter of Sir John Fogge of Ashford, in Kent. The family were distant relatives of the mighty Staffords, who controlled the dukedom of Buckingham and the earldom of Wiltshire until 1521.[1] Nonetheless, William Stafford was a commoner, and only a second son, and thus served Henry VIII as a soldier.[2]
Marriage Notes (Lady Mary Boleyn)

...
When the marriage was discovered after Mary became pregnant, the couple were banished from court.

The couple initially lived at Chebsey in Staffordshire, but later moved to the Boleyn family home, Rochford Hall at Rochford, in Essex. They lived in relative obscurity until Mary died in 1543, after which Stafford served in Scotland. He was knighted there in 1545 and, two years later, became an MP for Hastings. Also in 1545, Stafford remarried, this time to his distant cousin, Dorothy Stafford, the youngest daughter of Henry Stafford, 1st Baron Stafford and Ursula Pole.
