Events
• Obituary, , Barnstable Patriot in Barnstable Patriot
Nathaniel Smith, long a member of the M.E. church, died Oct. 3d and was buried from the church on th 5th. Since the pastorate of Rev. S. Fox commenced, six months ago, there have been six deaths of his church emebers,--all of excellent repute and held in high regard. These, added to deaths of others who were residents here at the same time, have swelled the number to within a fraction of two per cent. of the whole population. There has been no prevailing sickness, but quite the reverse. A phenomenal matter, that with general good health such a proportion should be, in so brief a period, removed by death. None of them were young persons and some of advanced age.
North Eastham. -- Died, Wednesday morning, 3d inst., at the house of Asa G. Nickerson, where he had been boarding for several months, Nathaniel Smith, at the age of 78 years. He has been a sufferer from rheumatism for a number of years, so much so that he has not been able to do any work. He leaves a wife in poor health mentally, three sons, tow daughters and several grandchildren to mourn his loss. Funeral services were hels at he M.E church, of which he had been afaithful member for some fifteen years, Rev. S. Fox officiating, who took for his remarks, the passage found in John 11:26.
Mrs. Clara Abbott, of Boston, was in town last week, called by the sickness and death of her father, Nathaniel Smith; also Mrs. Timothy and Mrs Asa Smith. of Clinton, daughter-in-law of the deceased.

Notes
Marriage Notes (Mercy Walker)
"Nathaniel, along with Ephraim Covel, Andrew Clarke, Nathaniel Doane and Samuel Burge, Jr. were founders of the second church of Harwich on November 12, 1747. That church became the First Congregational Church of Harwich and the original building stood close to where the present church was built. Nathaniel was "impowered to finish the upper inside and do the plastering that is to be done" for the house being built for the new pastor. Letters of administration for the estate of Nathaniel Smith were to John Smith on December 12, 1775. No will was filed. Settlement of the estate was by inventory and agreement and provided a widow's benefit. No children or grandchildren were named in documents, only creditors Deacon Edward Hall, Samuel Ellis, Samuel Kendrick, Isaac Knowles, Desire Bangs, Nathan Hall, James Baker, Reuben Eldridge, and Gershom Hall."
