Cape Cod Times obit
ORLEANS \emdash Edward James Smith, lifelong publisher and artist, age 92, died Oct. 12, 2010, at home in Orleans.

He was the husband of the late Mary (Corcoran) Smith of Orleans.

Born in New Haven, Conn., Ed was raised in the Bronx and Queens Village, N.Y., where he learned his love for the game of golf as a caddy at local courses.

Following graduation from high school, Ed worked as a commercial artist and illustrator for the Cavanaugh Advertising Agency in New York City. He enlisted in the New York National Guard's 69th "Silk Stocking" Division in 1940 and was called to active duty following the attack on Pearl Harbor, serving until July 1945.

Ed met his future bride in 1941 while stationed at Camp Edwards (Otis AFB) for pre-deployment training. He returned to Cape Cod and wed Mary on June 29, 1946.

In 1947, Ed and Mary began a small printing business called The Spider Web Press. In 1949 they began publishing the Oracle newspaper, which they ran successfully for nearly 30 years before selling to Hughes Newspapers in the late 1970s.

Ed had many passions, including golf, gardening, politics and people. He successfully helped numerous local, state and federal office seekers win elections in Massachusetts. His truly unique paintings and illustrations of local people and places personify and capture his lifelong love affair with Cape Cod.

Ed is survived by four sons, Michael C. of Orleans, Thomas S. of Yarmouth, Jeffrey D. of Alexandria, Va., and James W. of Orleans; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at the Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in St. Joan of Arc Church, Canal Road, Orleans. Burial will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Orleans Rescue Squad, c/o Fire Department Association, 58 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA 02653.
