Peter Everett Small, 70
Davenport, FL \emdash Peter Everett Small, 70, of Davenport, Fla., died at home Dec. 24, 2011, of acute kidney failure.
He was born on Cape Cod on June 3, 1941, son of Everett Chester Small and Mary Gilman Deer. He married Connie Jean Brown on Sept. 10, 1966. He was a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and Stockbridge School of Agriculture Hotel and Restaurant Management Program at the University of Massachusetts.
He cheffed at various restaurants on Cape Cod early in his career, then at UMass, working in its test kitchen during the summers. In 1969, he became director of School Food Services in Greenfield. He served in the same position for the town of Barnstable from 1973 until he retired in 1996.
While in Barnstable, he instituted several new programs for the schools, including salad bars and a la carte lines, and even more choices at the elementary level. He also contracted with Elder Services to provide Meals on Wheels and the feeding at the congregate sites on Cape Cod.
He was active in the Massachusetts School Food Service Association, serving as legislature chairman, vice president and president at various times in the late 1970s and mid-1980s.
A native Cape Codder, he grew up in Chatham and lived in Yarmouthport most of his married life. He moved to Florida in recent years.
He was very active in the Cape Cod Model "A" Ford Club and did several body-off Model "A" restorations. He also enjoyed woodcarving, making several quarterboards, and belonged to several woodcarving clubs in Florida after his retirement.
He took pride in maintaining his homes well, landscaping them to always look neat and well tended, and being careful to have many colorful plantings.
He was a member of DeWitt Clinton Lodge in Sandwich, and of Community Presbyterian Church in Celebration, FL. While living on Cape Cod, he was a member of First Congregational Church in Yarmouthport, where he cooked many chowdah suppers and blueberry muffin breakfasts.
He was predeceased by his parents, and a sister, Marilyn Chamberlain of Douglasville, GA. Survivors include his wife, Connie; and daughters Rebecca (William Luosey) and Susan (Mark Dutra). He also leaves four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Community Presbyterian Church in Celebration, FL.
Donations in his name may be sent to: Model "A" Ford Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 95151, Nonantum, MA 02495.
