MOSES SIMMONS, went to Holland with the Pilgrims and sailed from Leyden in 1621 in the ship "Fortune," one of the second party of Pilgrims. The first party of Pilgrims sailed from Leyden in 1620, in two ships, the mayflower and the Speedwell. The Speedwell gave up the voyage at Plymouth, England. The Mayflower sailed alone from Plymouth on 6 Sept 1620, arrived at Cape Cod Nov. 11, and land her passengers at Plymouth, Massachusetts on 21 1620. The Fortune held the second party of Pilgrims, numbering 35. She arrived at Cape Cod on 9 Nov. 1621 and landed her passengers at Plymouth, Mass. on 19 Nov. 1621, a year after the landing of the Mayflower. Source: 1933 Henry S. Crowe, comp. "Moses, Plymouth, one of the first comers, arrived in the Fortune 1621, born at Leyden, and bearing the Dutch name of Symonson or Simonson, but early shortened his name to the first two syllables: probably brot. w., but no children known except Moses and Thomas, who may both have been born here. He settled at Duxbury, was one of the original purchasers of Dartmouth and Proprs. of Bridgewater, and Middleborough, but did not rem. to eather. Moses, Duxbury, son of the precedig or perhaps his grandson for one of the name is mentioned which may however have been son of Thomas; by wife Sarah had John, Aaron, Mary, Elizabeth, and Sarah, who all married and he died 1689." Notes

"Nathaniel Stone Simpkins.\emdash Nathaniel S. Simpkins was born in Brewster, Mass., January 8, 1796. He was the eldest son of Rev.. John and Olive (Stone) Simpkins, and grandson of Dea. John Simpkins, of Boston. The Rev. John Simpkins graduated from Harvard College in 1786, married a daughter of Rev. Nathaniel Stone, the minister of the first church at Harwich. His son Nathaniel, received an Academical education, and was trained to business pursuits. He engaged for a few years, in the book-selling and stationery business in Boston, and established the "County Book Store " in Barnstable, for many years the only one of the kind in the County.

Mr. Simpkins was the founder of two Cape newspapers. In 1835 he established the Barnstable Journal, which he soon placed on a paying basis, and it continued to succeed during the three or four years of his management. In 1836, in connection with four others, he established the Yarmouth Register, being one of its proprietors and its business manager and publisher, for about two years. Nearly forty-five years ago he was engaged in fitting out and managing fishing vessels at Yarmouth Port. He purchased the wharf, store and landing place on the premises, which something like two centuries before had been owned by Capt. Nicholas Simpkins, who in his day was in command of the Castle in Boston harbor, who for a few years was a resident here, and who sold to Andrew Hallet, in 1645, his lands in this town. Mr. Simpkins was a direct descendant of Nicholas, but at the time of coming into possession of this property was not aware that it had ever been held by his ancestor.

Mr. Simpkins was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, in the years 1836, 1850 and 1851. He was one of the earliest advocates and promoters of the Hoosac Tunnel enterprise, and voted for the first bill passed in favor of that project. He was for many years a director of the First National Bank of Yarmouth, and also a director of the Cape Cod Railroad until it was merged with the Old Colony Railroad. In these positions he proved a prudent, faithful and efficient guardian of the interests confided to his care. In his private dealings he was careful, pains-taking, scrupulous in fulfilling his engagements and kindly in his bearing to those with whom he came in contact.

Mr. Simpkins was one of the first members of the Swedenborgian church of Yarmouth, and was efficient in his aid to the local as well as the general organization. By his union with Eliza Thacher of Yarmouth, five children were born, who arrived at mature age, viz: Charles H., Mary, John, George W., and Nathaniel Stone, jr. John and Nathaniel Stone were prominent and successful business men in New York, both being especially identified in the Calumet and Hecla Mining Copper Company. John died in 1870, and Nathaniel S., jr., in 1883. Of the surviving sons Charles H. Simpkins is engaged in business in San Francisco and was one of the original pioneers of 1849. George W. Simpkins resides in St. Louis and occupies in summer, the old homestead in Yarmouth Port, which belonged to his father."

Marriage Notes (Richard Betts)
Tryon County was formed from Albany County in 1772, and was renamed Montgomery County in 1784. Montgomery County was subdivided, and Broadalbin became part of Fulton County in 1838. (Fulton County History on rootsweb)
----------------------------------------------------
"RICHARD5 BETTS, (Augustine4, Robert3, Richard2-1), was born 16 July 1756 and m. ca. 1784 Abigail, the daughter of Andrew and Judith (Burtis) Skidmore of Beekman. Abigail was born 20 June 1769 and died 27 July 1846 in Broadalbin, NY.

Richard Betts came to Beekman ca. 1779 and evidently was a school teacher while here. By 1786 he had removed to Broadalbin in Albany Co. (He was not listed there in the 1790 census but two men of this name were in Queens Co., NY that year).

On 2 January 1786 a contract was drawn up between unknown subscribers and ____ Betts, most likely Richard but possibly Josiah who was here in 1790 and 1800. The terms of the agreement were:
"WHEREAS the said Betts promises Obliges and Absolutely engages himself unto us the Subscribers to teach a just, faithful and Regular School according to the best of his skill or knowledge in that business from the day of the date hereof for and during the Term of three month's Holy Days and every other Saturday excepted as is usual or customary in Schools, and in consideration of which we do promise to pay to the said Betts or --- the sum of ten shillings for each and every Scholar that (he) teach or either of us sign for, at the end or expiration of the Term aforesaid. Also We the subscribers do agree (to provide) sufficient fire wood for the term above (stated)."

Unfortunately there are no other names on these typescripts and we do not have access to the originals.

Richard Betts was a religous man and corresponded with Peter Lossing of Beekman on theological matters in letters dated 1783. Lossing quoted from St. Paul, and referred to Socrates and Aristophanes. One letter was dated Poughquag 12th 9th Month 1783. Richard Betts also wrote poetry when he was in Beekman, one poem follows;

Mylo forbear to call him blest
That only boasts a large Estate
Should all the Treasures of the Dest
Meet, and conspire to make him great,
I know thy better thoughts, I know
Thy reason can't descend so low,
Let a broad stream of Golden Sands
Through all his meadows roll
It is but a stretch, with all his lands
That wears a narrow soul
It swells amidst his wealthy store
And proudly prizing what he weighs
In his own scale he proudly lays
[two lines illeg]
And both stand (with) smile to see
How long their shadows grown
Alas! how vain their fancies be
to think they shape their own
Thus mingled still with wealth and State
Cresus himself can never know
It is true Demosthenes and his weight
Are far inferior to their show
Were I so tall to reach the Pole,
Or grasp the Ocean with my span,
I must be measured by my Soul:
The Mind's the standard of the Man.

Beekman's Precinct, Dutchess County Oct.
25th R. Betts. [no year stated]

On 10 Nov. 1786 Richard Betts gave a note for £55 to Daniel Campbell for "the improvement of lott No 10 in the same settlement where Mr. Mann lives & made an agreement to pay four pounds per year the 25th day of March next, for two years & then forever at eight pounds.
