After Lewis Wharf collapsed in 1922, the barn at 27A Bradford St. became home to the Barnstormers theater troupe. Writer Frank Shay, formerly of New York City, owned the barn. Shay’s house at 29A Bradford is east of the theater, which was called The Barn. In The Barn, Shay staged the premiere of Eugene O’Neill’s S.S. Glencairn, a cycle of three sea plays: Bound East for Cardiff, Moon of the Caribbees and The Long Voyage Home. The success of the S.S. Glencairn cycle led to its subsequent production in New York City.

CHAPTER XXXII, Provincetown Profiles, 1958
Edith Shay
LIVING alone these days on Cape Cod with a wealth of wonderful memories is Edith Shay, the writer.
I call on her periodically and I've spent some delightful hours talking over her 30-odd years on the Cape and her interesting associations and experiences.
She lives in an attractive cottage on Mill Hill road in Wellfleet and she's frequently working on literary projects. I hope one of these days she'll decide to write her memoirs. I'd love to read them.
Mrs. Shay and her late husband, Frank Shay, compiled a fascinating anthology of Cape Cod memorabilia which was brought out by Houghton Mifflin in 1951 under the title "Sand in Their Shoes: A Cape Cod Reader". It proved highly successful.
Frank Shay, who was a rollicking personality, was a pretty versatile fellow. He was an author, culinary expert and, at various times, a book seller, book publisher, editor, play director, lumberjack and sailor. He wrote novels, biographies, short stories, plays, and compiled anthologies \emdash more than 35 published works in all.
He was a gourmet and he loved to cook. His cookbook, "The Best Men are Cooks", published in 1941, is a collector's item today and second-hand copies bring a good price. His bookshop in New York was a celebrated rendezvous for writers just after World War I.
While he was running his bookshop he published some of the earliest works of Eugene O'Neill, Edna St. Vincent Millay and other young writers now known to fame. He was by nature an avid bookseller as well as a writer and he always interested himself passionately in the promotion of his own works, the works of his friends and the works of any writer he found interesting.
"Iren Men and Wooden Ships', illustrated by Edward Wilson; "Here's
Audacity! American Legendary Heroes", illustrated by Eben Given, and "Incredible Pizarro: Conqueror of Peru" v/ere among his own books he liked best.
Mrs. Shay says: "Perhaps his most successful book financially was 'My Pious Friends and Drunken Companions,' published in 1927. It was an anthology of convivial songs, illustrated by John Held, Jr. It really bother-ed Frank that this book was so much more successful than any of his others as he was fundamentally a serious person."
Frank Shay went to Provincetown in the early 1920's, attracted by the town's reputation as an exciting center of theatrical experiment. There he met and formed a lifelong friendship with Eugene O'Neill. Frank Shay ultimately had his own theatre which was called "The Barn". Nobody who was in the audience will ever forget his production of O'Neill's "Emperor Jones" in 1924, according to Mrs. Shay. Other short plays by O'Neill and other writers were also given on the primitive little stage.
Frank Shay and Edith Foley met in Provincetown. They were mar-ried there in 1930 and lived there until 1934 Then came a four-year absence from the Cape, save for short visits. In 1938 they returned to Cape Cod to stay and bought the house in Wellfleet where Mrs. Shay is living now. Frank Shay died in January, 1954.
Mrs. Shay was born in Manistique, Mich., "long enough ago to remember when lumber schooners sailed the Great Lakes." Her parents were Reuben Pratt and Edith (Jones) Foley, who had five other children. When she was very young the family moved to Winter Park, Fla., and until she became a Cape Codder she called Florida her home. But the summers were always spent in Michigan.
At Charlevoix, a long established summer resort, she met Katharine Smith, daughter of the eminent scholar William Benjamin Smith. The girls became lifelong friends. Katharine Smith was married to John Dos Passos, the writer, in 1929. The Dos Passos traveled widely but made Provincetown their home until September, 1947, when Mrs. Dos Passos was killed in an automobile accident near Wareham.
Edith Shay and Katharine Dos Passos worked together for many years. They collaborated on two successful books: "Down Cape Cod" (1936), a guidebook, and a novel, "The Private Adventure of Captain Shaw" (1945), the story of a young Cape Cod captain who got mixed up in the French Revolution. The guidebook was revised and enlarged in 1946.
Mrs. Shay, a graduate of Wellesley College, says she has been writing "something or other" all her life. Her first published book was written in collaboration with the late Elizabeth (Mrs. Coulton) Waugh, daughter-in-law of the late marine painter Frederick Judd Waugh. It is called "Collect-ing Hooked Rugs" and was published in 1927. Mrs. Waugh was an expert on hooked rugs and regarded the old ones as examples of an original American folk art.
Mrs. Shay has some beautiful pictures in her home, many of them gifts of friends. There is an aquatint of an old shipwreck on the back shore of Provincetown by the late Richard Miller. Outstanding is a water color of the Old Truro Meetinghouse by Charles Kaeselau of Provincetown.
She puts a very high regard on the friendships she has formed on Cape Cod. Harking back, she recalls the Frederick Judd Waughs, the Rich-ard Millers, the Hutchins Hapgoods, the Oscar Gieberichs, Susan Glaspell and many more.
Asked about her friends of today in the artists' and writers' colony, she mentioned particularly Mary Heaton Vorsc and William F. Boogar in Pro-vincetown; the Edmund Wilsons, Lucy L'Engle and the Eben Givens \emdash he is the painter and she is Phyllis Duganne, the writer, \emdash in Truro; the Charles R. Walkers, the Paul Chavchavadzes, the Edward Wilsons and Clare Leighton in Wellfleet.
She has a sister, Mrs. J. Robert Whelan, who lives in Provincetown. Another sister, Mrs. Edwin Dickinson, wife of the painter, makes Wellfleet her summer home. Other members of her family visit Cape Cod frequently.
Mrs. Shay reads a lot but has no favorite author, although she thinks William Faulkner is America's greatest living writer.
As I was departing from the Shay home on my last visit, I said: "Well, now that I'm leaving, Mrs. Shay, I suppose you'll be getting back to one of your literary projects?"
She laughed.
"Literary project nothing!" she said. "I'll be getting back to my house-work." 3
