Marriage Notes (Archelous Harding)
John, Archelaus, Joshua and Nathaniel Harding and their families moved to Mt. Desert, Maine. Archelaus later moved to Prospect, Maine.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
from Tina Gagnon:
Archelaus Harding was born May 31, 1740 in Eastham, Massachusetts. He was the son of John & Elizabeth (Young) Harding. On May 23, 1769 in Eastham he married Mercy Sears, who was born August 23, 1737 in Eastham, Massachusetts, the daughter of Josiah & Azuba (Knowles) Sears. Archelaus served in the Revolutionary War in Captain Joshua Higgin's eleventh (third Easton) company; second Barnstable company, regiment of Massachusetts militia. On April 20, 1776 he was chosen from the regiment to be commissioned as a Lieutenant. For his service in the Revolution, Archelaus was given the choice of $20 or 100 acres of land on the Penobscot River in Prospect, Maine. In 1787, Archelaus and Mercy packed up their six children; Mercy, Azuba, Archelaus, Sears, Samuel and Lucy, and moved north. Archelaus and Mercy settled down and built a house. The children grew up, got married and settled nearby to have families of their own. Many years later, Archelaus turned into a colorful soul...
According to family lore, Archelaus "Archie" Harding, was an old man of unsound mind who belonged in Prospect, where he had become a Freewill Baptist preacher. Archie was a familiar sight in Belfast. He wore a long white beard down to his waist and was given to kneeling right in the street and mud whenever moved to prayer. Ignorant people regarded him as a prophet or as one gifted with 'second sight' because he was said to have foretold the death of several persons. Whenever derided, he would pronounce an anathema which even the most thoughtless feared. In March of 1829, Archelaus, to prove his devotion, thought he could fast for forty days and forty nights but found he couldn't and it caused his death. During Archelaus' life he lived in two countries; The English Colonies & The United States, two states; Massachusetts & Maine, four counties; Barnstable, York, Hancock & Waldo, four towns; Eastham, Waldo Patent B, Frankfort & Prospect, all with only moving once. He lived long enough to see the birth of six children, twenty-four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The original family lands are still owned by Archelaus' descendants. The lands contain two family homes, a family cemetery and a spring called "Old Archie". Archelaus and Mercy are buried in the Harding family cemetery on Bowden Point Road in Prospect, Maine.

She Died with ye Small

"All of [their] ten children except Simeon died in 1765-6 of small-pox, imported in a package of clothing, sent from the West Indies, and washed in the house. Another account says the disease originated in the family of Dea. Paul Crowell, a wealthy citizen who lived near Ryder's Mill; in all 65 persons took the infection; the town expended £ 901 7 0, besides individual contributions. Mr Ryder, his wife and ten children were stricken down with the disease at once. At that early day the science of medicine was comparatively in its infancy: but few of the doctors knew anything practically about the malady. The two resident doctors died of the disease; finally a physician was brought from Boston to see the family, who pronounced the disease to be small-pox, of the most virulent and malignant type. The father, mother and nine children died of the foul disease. Simeon, a child of eleven years, was the only survivor, and the only heir of a large landed property. The bodies were buried on the farm, in a row of eleven mounds, where they remain to this day, an object of sad curiosity to the passer by. There were buried in this spot, in all about twenty, connected with the family. A sister of Mrs Ryder, Rebecca Howes, died of the disease; also Nehemiah Doane, who m. Hope Sears. Simeon Ryder, the surviving child, was born in 1755; he lived and died on the place he inherited. " amidon
