Notes
General:
About 1714 he built and lived in the old house at West Brewster, at Bound Brook, nearly opposite the ancient Sears burying ground. In the SE corner room the first seven of his children, were born. He moved to Norwalk CT around 1734 and was dismissed from the church in Harwich to the church in Norwalk 28 Mar 1736. His estate in Harwich was sold to Willard Sears of Yarmouth. In 1732 he bought an acre of the "Home Lot" from his brother-in-law Josiah Thacher Jr., on Washington Avenue, South Norwalk. There he built a house in which he lived until his death. He also owned other lands in Norwalk which at various times he deeded to his children. He was held to be an excellent man, a prominent citizen, a good husband, ajnd a generous father; and he held various positions in the town.

Note: A blue stone marks his grave. Nearby is a similar memorial to his son Nathaniel. A mound between them is probably the grave of Mary, his wife.
Will: 11 JUN 1754
Note: It was proven 15 Oct 1754. It mentions his wife Mary; children Josiah, Mary Ketchum, Phebe Squires, Joshua, Isac, John, and Anthony; and grandsons Nathaniel and Thacher.

       Children:
                1. Louisa Maria Sears (1852-1951)

Notes
General:
Judging from his detailed logs and letters, Captain Joshua seems a paradox. On one hand a highly accomplished sailor and businessman, hard driving with his vessel and crew, insistent that the Wild Hunter be a paragon of orderliness, and a talkative colorful character, yet he was plagued by seasickness and longed to retire to a place , "where I shall never see a ship again." He was known to bring not only his wife Minerva and daughter Louisa on voyages, but Louisa's pet pony, so that she could ride about the deck!

The Wild Wave was a clipper launched by the Shiverick shipyard in Dennis, Mass. in 1855.

Joshua Sears was Constable of Harwich in 1745. He was a man of large stature, and of great strength and hardihood. In 1746, he removed to Middletown, CT, and purchased land on the east side of the Connecticut river, in that part of town afterward set off as Chatham. In Col. Rec. CT., vol. X, we find the memorial of Rebecca Sears, admx, to the Assembly, setting forth that debts exceeded personal estate by L 135 16 10, and asking liberty to sell real estate. Mar. 9, 1732, Ebenezer Nickerson deeded to Joshua Sears, for the consideration of £ 532, "about 36 acres of land with the buildings, &c., eastward of Point of Rocks, Harwich, 3 Lots: First, the eastern-most originally laid out to Capt. Jona. Bangs; Second, to successors Mark Snow; Third, the westward to Thomas Clark, bounded on Deacon Chillingsworth Foster, Nathaniel Hopkins, John Freeman, and Clark & Cole lot." 12
