Carol Janoplis, 77

Nurse was devoted to helping others

Carol (Santos) Janoplis, 77, of Provincetown, died Tuesday, June 17, at her home in the company of her family following a long illness. She was the wife of the late Michael “Uncle Junior” Janoplis, who died last month.

Born in Provincetown, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Madeline Santos. After graduating from Provincetown High School in 1949, she fulfilled her desire to help others by entering the nursing field. In 1951 she graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital nursing school in New Bedford. In 1956 she married the love of her life, Michael Janoplis. They had two children, Donna Hough, of Brewster, who is married to Jerry Hough, and Darin Janoplis, of Provincetown.

Mrs. Janoplis will be remembered as a quiet, caring woman whose first love was her family. She was known for her kindness and compassion for both people and animals, and a life-long appreciation of the beauty of flowers. She found quiet fulfillment in the belief that she was able to help others through donations to several different organizations. Some of the charities she cared about were the Jane Goodall Gorilla Foundation, Brewster Animal Rescue League, Covenant House, Lower Cape Outreach, Christian Children’s Foundation and Smile Train, an organization providing free cleft surgery to children around the world. She was also a life-long member of St. Peter the Apostle parish in Provincetown.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 20, in St. Peter the Apostle Church, 11 Prince St., Provincetown, followed by burial in St. Peter the Apostle Cemetery. Visiting hours are Thursday 4 to 7 p.m. at the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown.

If desired, memorial contributions in honor of Mrs. Janoplis may be made to Animal Rescue League c/o Advancement Department Animal Rescue League of Boston, 10 Chandler St., Boston, MA 02116, or online at www.arlboston.org; or to Carrie A. Seaman Animal Shelter, 5 Sandy Hill Lane, P.O. Box 1374, Provincetown, MA 02657, (508) 487-4243, or online at www.casasanimalshelter.org.
Marriage Notes (Michael Janoplis)
Provincetown Banner story, 19 Aug 2004:
Darin Janoplis, co-owner of the Mayflower Café with his sister and cousin, did get through his application process for 10 before the limit was imposed, so his 10 H2-b foreign workers, from Poland, the Czech Republic and Jamaica, all arrived. (He also uses some seven or eight J1 visa student foreign workers.) However, because he’s very concerned about next year, he’s been working with McNulty (who also completed her process for 44 workers in time) and others to resolve the visa problem.

He’s heard all the arguments about how the jobs should be filled by American workers, he says, but he’s convinced there aren’t as many Americans here looking for the jobs he’s advertising.

“When I was growing up [in Provincetown], everybody’s mother had a summer job, you know, scooping ice cream, working at the Dairy Queen, waitressing, whatever. And it’s just not like that anymore. Fathers are earning more money doing whatever jobs, involving construction or plumbing, or electrician work, and the mothers are selling real estate. … So the local workforce is just not in need of jobs like this. There are people, of course, but there aren’t enough people to meet the demand for our labor.”
He says he had one or two Americans from the Boston area apply for the jobs he advertised.

In general, owners say they get few if any applications from Americans for the jobs they fill with foreign workers. Few college kids plan that far ahead for summer work, they aren’t available until June and many have to leave mid-August to return to school.

Housing also is an issue. Foreign workers, it seems, are willing to live in the dormitory-style housing provided by many of the business owners.
Janoplis says he’s “petrified” about what might happen next year if the limit isn’t lifted.

“It has gotten even worse as far as employing the local population. I mean, who can we recruit? OK, high school kids, how many kids are there? I met one high school kid who came in with his skateboard to get grilled cheese sandwiches and I struck up a conversation with him and he said he was looking for a job. He seemed like he was kind of a cool guy, not a wise ass, and smart. … But then it turns out that his parents are divorced so he’s got to go away for two weeks in August, and he’s got to go back to school on Labor Day.”

Boatyard Labors To Salvage Boat

Efforts to salvage the Boston dragger Margaret Rose continued this week on the Cape End sandbar where she has been stranded since her grounding a little over a week ago, while a preliminary hearing, at which the Captain and members testified, was held by the Coast Guard at the Customs House in Boston on Monday.

Francis Santos, owner and operator of Flyer's Boatyard, said that he and his workmen with the help of James Silva and his crew, have been working on the boat every day, weather and tide permitting. Mr. Santos said that a large audience was at the beach last Sunday to watch the major feat of turning the boat over, after the port side had been temporarily repaired.

He reported that work has been held back part of the time by rough water and southwest winds, which are particularly unfavorable in that area. He said also that the boat's keel had been badly opened. He said he expects that by the end of the week, the more seriously damaged, starboard side, facing the sea, will also be repaired and the Margaret Rose will be ready to float, after James Silva and his men complete bulldozing operations to free her from the sandbar.

Mr. Santos said he had been offered the assistance of Captain Seraphine Codinha of the dragger Peter and Linda and of Captain Francis Motta of the Liberty Belle in towing the boat to his boatyard for completion of repairs.

It was reported that $15,000 damage was caused by the fire in the pilot house, damaging two dories, radar equipment, electronic fish scopes, two sounding machines and the radio, as well as the top of the pilot house. The blaze which gave firefighters a three-hour battle and which was reported to have been caused by a short circuit, broke out several hours after the seven fishermen aboard the craft were brought ashore by Race Point Coast Guardsmen in a dramatic breeches buoy rescue, shortly after the fishing vessel, with 1,000 pounds of fish in her hold, foundered on a shoal north of Wood End in heavy surf just before dawn on Jan. 16."

EASTHAM \emdash Lenora "Nory" Theresa (Santos) Thomas of 10 Surrey Drive in Eastham died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family on Sunday morning Aug. 1, 2010 in Chatham.

She was born on 39 Bradford St., the middle child of what would be six daughters, on Dec. 23, 1928 to Annie (Meads) and Frank Santos in Provincetown.

She lived by the rule her father taught her: "No one is better than you; and you're not better than anyone else." In her early years, she often got in trouble in school, sometimes for wearing pants. She worked at many popular establishments in town starting with the Gifford House in the early 1940s, the Governor Bradford, the Cottage Restaurant, Dairyland, and ending her career at John's Foot Long in 2000. A devout Catholic, she performed all her sacraments in St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church on Prince Street, where she married her long-time boyfriend, Donald Thomas, on Oct. 9, 1947.

She held a strong belief in family. She loved to laugh with her sisters with whom she shared fond memories and a special bond. She played basketball and volleyball, was good at chess and was always up for games or storytelling with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Never worried about "keeping up with the Joneses," she had little material wealth but was happy as long as she could "get in the car and go" wherever her husband would take her, since she never obtained a driver's license for herself. In her seventies, she learned all the U.S. Presidents, states and capitals. Up to her last day she remembered neighbors and friends from her past and never had a bad word to say about anyone. She enjoyed smoking, television, black coffee and good company. But more than anything, she loved to laugh.

Nory is survived by her husband of nearly 63 years, Donald J. Thomas of Eastham; her daughter Donna M. Thomas, also of Eastham; her son and daughter-in-law, Steven Z. and Karen A. Thomas; her grandson, Heath J. Thomas of Truro; her granddaughter and great-grandson, Alicia K. Thomas and Cyris M. DeVries of Provincetown; her granddaughter and great-granddaughter, Carmen M. Thomas and Razilee T.X. Mueller of Provincetown; her god-daughter, Claudia Hopkins of Harwich; her three sisters, Jeannie Costa, Loretta Lema and Sherry Costa; and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sisters Vivian Souza and Mary Enos.

Services will be held at St. Peter's in Provincetown on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to Meals on Wheels, c/o Eastham Senior Center, 1405 Nauset Road, Eastham, MA 02642 or to the Eastham Rescue Squad, 2520 State Highway, Eastham, MA 02642.

News
Another splendid specimen of present day fishing craft has been added to the local fleet in the new trawling schooner Antoine C. Santos, Manuel C. Santos master and owner. The new craft arrived here from Gloucester early Sunday morning, and swung her bunting during the next two days. It was believed at the time of keel-laying that this vessel would be completed by March first, at the latest, but bad weather and icy conditions made the work proceed draggingly. Her master has commanded the Philip P. Manta, Mary C. Santos and Josephine De Costa in turn, achieving therein a record for success that has never been equalled by Provincetown masters.

When the new schooner Antoine C. Santos reached her home port last Sunday morning early the bells and fog-horns on anchored shipping struck up a hearty but noisy greeting. One man who was not fully awakened by the racket thought it was George Washington’s birthday so turned over promptly in bed and fell asleep again. But he was awakened again by the din and his time was aroused to the full wideawake stage. Believing that the town had been apprised of the receipt of good news from the battlefield in France, he left his bed, went to his phone and called up Central, asked the cause of the celebration, was told what all the noise meant, said disappointedly, “Oh well!” or something that sounded like “well,” and returned to his cradle.
