Notes
General:
A biography from the period reads:
"To be governor of Massachusetts is, as it has been since the beginning of the republic, an honor to any man. Doubly great is it when the man who becomes governor has but lately attained manhood. This honor came to William Eustit Russell, who was born in Cambridge, Mass., January 6, 1857. He received the ordinary common-school education, but was widely popular, and when he was but twenty-five years of age was elected alderman and showed such marked ability that he was re-elected without opposition. In 1885 he became a candidate for mayor of Cambridge and was re-elected for three terms. He abandoned politics and went into business, but was called into the field again by the clamor of his party as the most available man in all Massachusetts for the Democratic party. He was made candidate for governor, but was defeated by a vote of twenty-eight thousand, He was again nominated in the succeeding year and was again defeated, but this time by only six thousand seven hundred and seventy-five votes. In 1890 he was again nominated and elected by nearly nine thousand plurality. He was re-elected at the end of his term and retain his place until the Republican upheaval in Massachusetts. He is one of the shrewdest and most careful of the young men in politics, for he is not yet forty years of age. His extraordinary success in such a state, at such an age, and under such circumstances, made him a prominent figure, and he has become, to an extent, conspicuous as a possible Democratic candidate for vice-president of the United States. He is one of the possible great factors in directing the affairs, not merely of his own state, but of the nation. It is already the political fancy to talk
of him as presidential a possibility."

Notes
General:
Provincetown Banner obit
Ann R. (Rutherford) Leidel, 84, of Provincetown, died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Monday, March 2.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., May 29, 1924, she was the daughter of the late George and Grace (Whelden) Rutherford. ["Weldon" in shorter version of same obit printed in Cape Codder.]

She graduated from Mount Vernon College, Mount Vernon, Va., in 1943.

Mrs. Leidel was the wife of the late Capt. John S. Leidel, USN (Ret.), a career naval officer whom she met in 1944 during WW II. At that time she was making target maps for the War Department in Washington, D.C. They were married for 49 years until his death in 1993.

As the wife of a career naval officer, she traveled the U.S. and the world, spending two years in Taiwan and two years in Turkey. She was a passionate amateur archaeologist and was most happy exploring Greek and Roman ruins in the remote regions of Turkey. In Taiwan she was president of the Navy and Marine Corps Officers Wives Club and occupied herself by volunteering time and resources to local charity groups.

Mrs. Leidel has a long family history in Provincetown. Her family has occupied the same home on Commercial Street for 150 years, and Provincetown has always been home. Her great-grandfather, Eliaphret Whelden, was the lighthouse keeper at Long Point after the Civil War.

After her husband's retirement they returned to Provincetown where she devoted the remainder of her life to family, and also to many charities supporting children and animals. She was loved very dearly by both her family and friends.

She is survived by her two sons, CSM Hugh D. Leidel and his wife (Soon) of Steilacoom, Wash., and John S. Leidel Jr. of Novato, Calif.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, at the Church of St. Mary of the Harbor, 517 Commercial St., Provincetown. Gately-McHoul Funeral Home (508-487-4470) is handling arrangements. She will be interred with her husband at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. If desired memorial contributions in her honor may be made to Provincetown Rescue Squad, 25 Shank Painter Road, Provincetown, MA 02657.
