Louis A. Rivers, 83

Fishing capt. was Lions Club’s original ‘tail twister’

Louis A. Rivers, 83, of Provincetown, died Monday evening, March 24, at Epoch Health Care center in Brewster. He was the husband of the late M. Marjorie “Margie” (Schmorow) Rivers, to whom he was married for 53 years until her death in November of 1999.

Born in Provincetown, he was the son of the late Joaquin and Maria Rivers. Mr. Rivers was a member of the Provincetown High School graduating class of 1942.

He was a fishing captain and co-owned Mar Lou Fisheries with his late wife. He and his wife also owned Louie’s Dine and Dance from 1951 to 1966, a restaurant and bar located in North Truro. In 1978 they christened their new fishing vessel, the Miss Sandy.

He was active in the Provincetown community and St. Peter the Apostle parish. For many years he was an active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and a 4th degree member of the Walter Welsh Council No. 2746 of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a Melvin Jones Lion in the Provincetown Lions Club and was the original Lion “tail twister” in the club, a fundraising technique partially responsible for the generous donations that are synonymous with the Provincetown Lions Club. And he was a familiar face at Adams Pharmacy on Commercial Street every morning as a member of the daily coffee group.

“He was such a sweet man,” Mary-Jo Avellar, chair of the Provincetown Board of Selectmen, said of Louis Rivers. “He always had a smile on his face. I never heard him say a bad thing about anybody.”

Mr. Rivers is survived by his son, Louis A. Rivers Jr. and his wife, Joyce (Woods), of Brewster; his grandson, Louis A. Rivers III and his wife, Jennifer, of Attleboro; his great-granddaughter, Emily Ryan Rivers, of Attleboro; and his brother, Jack Rivers and his wife, Anna, of Brunswick, Ga. He was also the father of the late Sandra Rivers, who died in 1975, and brother of the late Emily Roderick.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter the Apostle Church, 11 Prince St., Provincetown, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, followed by burial in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Visiting hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Friday evening at Gately-McHoul Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown. If desired, memorial donations in his honor may be made to Mass Lions Eye Research C/O PDG William T. Murphy P.O. Box 6050, New Bedford, MA 02742-6050 or to Harwich Hospice, 111 Headwaters Dr., Harwich, MA 02645.
