Notes
General:
Anderson estimates his birth as about 1610, based upon his deposition 2 June 1663 aged 53 years.
Although Mather's "Magnalia" says that Nicholas Baker "had but a private education", there is a record of a Nicholas Baker educated at Cambridge, where he received his A.B. at St. John's College in 1631/1632, and his A.M. in 1635; some believe this to be the immigrant to New England.
He was first at Roxbury, then removed to Hingham, where he was one of first settlers and was made freeman 3 March 1635/1636. He received a share in the first division of house lots in Hingham in 1635. He afterward became an extensive landholder in Hull, and resided there. Savage says he seems to have been chiefly employed at agriculture at first, although he was also active in public affairs. He was a deputy to the Massachusetts Colony Court in 1636, the first session in which Hingham was represented, and again in 1638. He and/or his wife belonged to the Hingham church as early as 1638, as several of their children were baptized there.
In 1642 Nicholas Baker and three others from Hingham applied to the Court for lands at Seekonk, but the lands were not granted. When lands were granted at Hull in 1644 he received two two-acre lots on Further Hill, and by 1657 he and his son John owned another on Town Hill. He also received eleven more allotments on islands and hills and remained a prominent resident of Hull until he was called to be ordained pastor of the first church at Scituate in 1660.
Scituate at this time has two churches. Mr. Charles Chauncey, pastor of First Church, believed in baptism by immersion, for infants as well as for children. Nearly half the church believed infant sprinkling was the correct form of baptism, and they withdrew to form the Second Church of Scituate. Mr. Chauncey left to return to his former parish in Ware, England, and Mr. Henry Dunster, upon retiring from the Presidency of Cambridge College, served in the ministry at First Church in Scituate for five years. At his death, Nicholas Baker was invited to preach at Scituate. He was ordained the third minister of the first church of Scituate in 1660, and the records show he had a peaceful and godly influence. He was especially instrumental in bringing about a reconciliation between the two Churches at Scituate, who had had no communion with each other for 35 years. His Church had now returned to the practice of infant baptism. By consent of the First Church, he signed an instrument of reconciliation with the Second Church, 1 April 1675. Dr. Arrowsmith said of Nicholas Baker: "so good a logician, that he could offer up to God a reasonable service, so good an arithmetician, that he could wisely number his days, and so good an orator, that he persuaded himself to be a good Christian."
His first wife, probably the mother of all the children, died in 1661. The next year he married (2) Grace. The journal of Mr. Peter Hobart at Hingham records: "Mr. Nicholas Baker's wife died at Scituate 1661. Mr. Nicholas Baker married 1662." The births of his children are not found on record at Scituate, and the baptisms in the first Church during his ministry are deficient. The births may have been recorded in Hull.
Nicholas' inventory says he died 22 August 1678. Peter Hobart's journal says that he died on 29 August 1678. Neither record gives his age at death, and Anderson says no other contemporary record of his death has been found. Savage says that he died "22 Aug. 1678, aged 67", but does not state his source, and it may simply be based on the deposition of 1663.
His will is dated 15 June 1678, proved 29 October 1678. It left to wife Grace all that was hers before she married him, plus half his dwelling house at Hull, and a number of parcels of land during her life, provided son Samuel, or any of the children at Hull, had liberty to cut wood for timber or firewood. Son Samuel received half the house at Hull, lands, etc and was to receive all of it at the decease of his stepmother, and was to pay his sisters Mary and Elizabeth L10 each in silver money. To son Nicholas a share in Conihassett lands at Scituate, he paying sisters Sarah and Deborah £10 each in silver money. The four daughters received "land given me by a town vote in Scituate ... to be equally divided betwixt them" He bequeathed to "my wife's grandchild, Mary Web" a Cypress Chest, brass andiron, and books, and to "my grandchild, Mercy Baker," £10. Wife Grace was to be the executrix, with brother Nathaniel Baker and kinsman John Loring as overseers. Witnesses were Thomas Clapp and James Cudworth, who testified at the proving that Mr. Baker had intended to leave his wearing clothes to his sons Samuel and Nicholas but "had forgot to set it down in his will."

The "History of Hingham" includes a son Nathaniel, which Smith says is "certainly a confusion with Nicholas's grandson Nathaniel3 [Samuel2], surname Baker." Nathaniel is named as a son of Nicholas by both Savage and Deane. He was not named in his father's will of 1678. Deane believed he settled at Hull.

Anderson discusses another possible son, Thomas who married Christian Beal. "Nicholas Baker in his will does not name a son Thomas, nor does he name any grandchildren who could have been children of Thomas. Thomas Bacor of Hingham married Christian Beal, daughter of Nathaniel Beal and granddaughter of John Beal of Hingham. She was presumably the child baptized on 9 November 1654 [NEHGR 121:104], and died at Boston on 20 September 1677 [NEHGR 121:200], leaving a small son, Thomas. This Thomas is mentioned in the will of his grandfather Beal, who died on 20 December 1708, the will being proved on 29 December that year [Savage 1:146]. If Thomas Bacor was Nicholas' son, and left a child named Thomas (even if he himself died as a young man), then why did the godly grandfather Baker not name grandson Thomas in his will, as grandfather Beal did? However, Thomas does not seem to be Nathaniel's son, and there are no other Bakers in Hingham. The possibility exists that Thomas Bacor was really Thomas Bacon, and perhaps a son of George Bacon of Hingham, although a new reading of the original manuscript of Hobart's journal at the Massachusetts Historical Society shows conclusively that the surname is written Bacor in the original. It is doubtful that Thomas belongs in either the Baker or the Bacon families here mentioned, and he was probably from somewhere else." 30
