"Mr, Editor: Since I last wrote you, one of the promising young men of this village, has been the subject of a hair breadth escape.
On the seventeenth of March, as one of our vessels was being prepared for a voyage South, Paul A. Rich, one of the crew, remarkable as am told for his agility--already somewhat exhausted from close application during the day, attempted to cross from the foremast to the mainmast on the spring-stay, and did indeed reach the mainmast but with so entire exhaustion that he was unable to adjust himself according to previous calculation, and was left to the only alternative of an unknown fate on the vessels deck sixty feet below. Several witnessed the sad scene, and had rendered in awful silence their verdict as to his destiny. His suspension by his hands is short of a moment, when he falls and is taken from the deck helpless, yeat a living man, the subject of an interposing power, more than human pronounced by universal aclamation divine. He was as sensible as ever in a moment or two, and on the examination of medical practitioners, it was found that the only injury he sustained, was the dislocation of the hip joint. ... [blather]
