"Death of Joseph S RichMarriage Notes (Euphenia A Swain)
Capt. Joseph S. Rich, son of the late Michael and Betsey Snow Rich, died at his home in this village Tuesday evening, at he age of 75 years and two months.
Mr. Rich was born in Truro and attended the schools of this town. His early life was spent in mackerel fishing and oystering. He commanded several vessels, the last being the Carrie P. Rich of which he was part owner.
In 1861 he married Betsey Lombard Paine of Truro, who died three years later; of this union one son was born, Herbert A. Rich.
He was united in marriage to Miss Euphenia A. Swain of Laconia, N.H., in 1870. In 1881 their son, George Irving, was born.
After giving up the command of the Carrie P. Rich he resided in Provincetown one year and then moved to Laconia. He later moved to Boston and finally engaged in the wholesale fish business on Commercial Wharf under the name of Rich Bros. He continued in this business very successfully twenty years, with different partners, the last being Henry B. Thomas and Herbert C. Rich. His health failing last he gave up the business life.
Mr. Rich was a resident of Somerville about twenty-one years. He was a member of the Evangelical Church there. Four years ago he came to his native place and bought a residence here.
He was deeply interested in the church and a constant attendant if health permitted and by his good example taught one what a good christian gentleman should be. He will be greatly missed by the townspeople as he always had a cheerful greeting for everybody.
He leaves a wife and two sons, Herbert A. Rich, George Irving Rich, tow brothers, Michael A. Rich of North Truro, Obed Rich of San Francisco, Cal., two sisters, Mrs. Betsey Grozier, North Truro, Mrs. Dorcas Gorham, of Wellfleet, tow grandchildren, Raymond and Marion Rich of Somerville." "Wellfleet.
A sad accident, and one that threw a feeling of gloom over the community yesterday, was the death of Mr. Joseph Rich of Malden, who was killed by the three o'clock train from Provincetown at the crossing near Mr. William H. Doane's, on the road from the Holbrook House to Taylor Hill. Mr. Rich has had the contract for the cottages that are building at the shore near that place, and arrived from Boston on the 11 o;clock train on business in connection with them. He was driving in a light carriage and evidently did not see or hear the train until it was too late. Both horse and driver were killed. Mr. Rich leaves a widow and adopted daughter in Malden, and one sister, Mrs. Thomas Hopkins, in this place. Medical Examiner, Dr. S.N.
