Announcement was made in Wellfleet on last Wednesday, of the discovery of buried ruins on Great Island, site of hitherto legendary trading founded, according to tradition, before the white man established his first permanent settlement on Cape Cod. The discovery wa made by Earl Rich, caretaker of the island, which is owned by Frank M. Wise, Boston grain broker.
The antiquity of the ruin is proven by the heavy growth of trees and a two-foot covering of earth above the rubble. Local tradition has held that the structure or structures were destroyed by fire, and the charcoal which has been unearthed over a large area indicates that this was the case.
Among the relics unearthed are bronze spoons, one bearing the date 1703, roughly cast musket balls and bucj shot, pewter buttons, clay pipes. shoe buckles and a razor of ancient make, its blade corroded but ready for grinding and honing. There is great deal of broken pottery of white and native make, and mortar which was used to bind the brick and field stone of the two huge fireplaces together, some of it colored. This was evidently made from lime obtained by burning shells of oysters from Wellfleet harbor.
The outline of the ruins is irregular with the long axis running roughly east and west. The remains of one huge fireplace is at the east wall and another equally large stood in what appears to have been the central portion. Whether the site was covered by one huge structure or several smaller ones, will have to be determined by further excavation. Mr. Rich, who has excavated only enough to outline the whole building area, believes that a single building covered the site.
The sites of the 'post's; refuse heaps are marked by large mounds of shell underneath a covering of sand and pine. Fish and deer bones are abundant."
