Angered because his divorced wife refused to live with him after his release from Barnstable jail, where he had served a two years' sentence for smuggling Chinese into this country, George M. D. Gardinier, known locally as "Chic," shot and killed her and then committed suicide at Wellfleet Friday. Gardinier was released from jail last fall. He had returned to Wellfleet about a week ago, after a lengthy absence, and had been seen with his former wife, it is supposed trying to persuade her to return to live with him. They are survived by one son, a boy of about 13 years. Mrs. Gardinier, who had resumed her maiden name, Agnes Rich, was the night operator in the Wellfleet telephone exchange, which was located in her house.
