Anne Rice Gainey
Secretary, volunteer
ORLEANS\emdash Anne Rice Gainey, 90, died March 12 in her Namskaket home. She was the wife of the late William Gainey.
Mrs. Gainey was born in Pittsfield, where her mother, Anne Gilmore Rice, had gone to stay with family as her father, Waldo H. Rice, fought in World War I. She grew up in Needham. She watched Red Sox games at Fenway Park with her father and saw Babe Ruth play for the Boston Braves near the end of his career. She graduated from Green Mountain Junior College in Vermont in 1939 and attended Katherine Gibbs School in Boston before beginning a secretarial career.
Mrs. Gainey left New England to explore and live in the American Southwest during World War II. After camping in the desert, riding a mule down into the Grand Canyon and living on a dude ranch, she applied for a job at the top-secret Los Alamos nuclear research center but ended up working at an airfield in Arizona where young cadets were learning to fly in tiny, fragile biplanes. She later moved to Washington D.C. to work until the declining health of her parents required her to return to Needham.
Her family began summering in East Orleans in 1940 after the hurricane of '38 destroyed their summer home in Mattapoisset. She worked at the Southward Inn near Orleans center and recalled how dark the blacked-out town would be when she walked home at night during the war. After her parents died, she and her siblings bought a house and land in the Skaket area. Due to the lack of year-round employment in Orleans she went off to western Mass. and found work and a husband at the Curtis Hotel in Lenox.
In 1947 she married William Gainey, who became a Cape Cod carpenter, and, in 1951, built their home that overlooks Namskaket Marsh. Together, with great spirit they raised nine children. She worked as a secretary for Oren Tovrov, writer of the Ma Perkins radio show. She and growing brood of children later cleaned out old houses, attics and barns to stock Gainey's Used Furniture store on Cove Road through 1968.
Through much of the 1970s she worked as community news editor for the Orleans Oracle. Her column "Day by Day" chronicled life in Orleans and in her family. After her husband died in 1976 she found the most personally rewarding position of her career as the secretary at Orleans Elementary School from 1978 to 1985. She worked part-time at Orleans Carpenters and volunteered on town committees.
Despite her loss of hearing, or maybe because of it, she had a gift for listening and connecting to people.
Mrs. Gainey is survived by her brother, James H. Rice of Cummaquid; her nine children, Lee Edwards of Orleans, Anne Ekstrom of Bourne, William Gainey of Orleans, Darcy Truehart of Southhampton, James Gainey of Orleans, Mary Gainey of East Harwich, Thomas Gainey of Brewster, Timothy Gainey of Brewster, Patricia Ferzoco of Setauket, N.Y.; 19 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister, Nancy Armstrong.
A celebration of her life will be held June 26 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans. Memorial donations may be made to Lower Cape Outreach, 19 Brewster Cross Road, Orleans, MA 02653 or Hospice of Cape Cod, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601.
