General:
CHRISTIAN REMICK came from England or from Holland. He was born in 1631 and was living at Kittery 24 Jan. 1715. He signed the submission to Massachusetts in 1652. He settled on Eliot Neck, where he had a grant of fifty-two acres confirmed by the town, 8 April 1651. Six later grants are recorded. His house stood near the river, not far from the present school-house. He was a planter and surveyor and was often one of the selectmen and Treasurer of the town. His wife HANNAH was living 30 April 1703. Christian REMICK was a proprietor of old Kittery, and when the common lands of Kittery and Berwick were divided, about 1750, his grandson, Nathaniel REMICK, received several hundred acres. --Old Kittery and Her Families, 677.Marriage Notes (Hannah Foster)
Christian Remick's approximate date of birth arrived at from the following record:
4 Jan 1698-99, "The Deposition of Christian Remich aged 67 years of thereabouts Testifieth . . . that he well knew Dennis Downing now Deceased Lived on the farm . . . which his son Joshua Downing now Posseseth and that . . . Dennis Downing Possessed it in year fifty one . . . he being a near neighbor to said Downing. . . ." [York Deeds, 4:f.151.]
Christian's first grant of land occurred in 1651, and before 17 July 1661, when he had 20 acres granted him by Kittery, he had received 52 acres on which he built his homestead. His name appears on a list of freemen of Kittery, 16 Nov 1652, and when Kittery acknowledged herself under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts, 18 May 1653, one of the signers was "Christian Remech." His signature again appears on a Kittery reminstrance dated 20 Dec 1652, and on a Maine petition, date unknown, but probably about 1669.
Christian served as selectman of Kittery from 1670 to 1673, in 1676, and in 1688. He was one of a special committee appointed to instruct Kittery's Deputy to the General Court of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay in 1673, and the Representative to the General Court of the Province of Massachusetts in 1692.
The last mention of Christian Remick alive was in a deposition dated 12 May 1718. 3
"Then came Christian Remick's twenty acres, granted 17 July 1661, and laid out 22 Feb. 1665. He deeded this and other grants east of it to his son Isaac, who sold the same to John Dennet. Jr., 2 May 1698, and moved to South Carolina. Dennet added to his farm by purchase of Richard King's seventeen acres in 1700 and by town grants. This farm has been in the possession of the Dennet family until now. The
house, built about the year 1720, stands "on the east side of the Eliot road about a mile above Portsmouth Bridge."
"The Remick of whom the farm was purchased resided in a house on the bank of the Creek west of the road, and opposite the Dennet house."
In 1697 there was a dispute between Thomas Spinney and Christian Remick about their boundary line, and in consequence the accompanying plot of lands appears in the records of the Superior Court at Boston with the following statement :
"Kittery, December 18th, 1697. At the motion and Request of Mr. Thomas Spinney layd out the Norther bounds of his old lot in the great Cove as also his addition at the head thereof containing fifteen acres, and in running out the aforesaid bounds as they were shewed to me by the sd Thomas Spinney and John Spinney I find the land in Controversie claimed by Mr Christian Remmick and Improved by Samll Spinney to fall within Mr Thomas Spinneys bounds of his fifteen acre lot as is demonstrated in the figure by a pricked line, the other lots being but demonstrations of the Scituations of jacent places.
By me William Godsoe
Surveighr for the Town
of Kittery."
The plot is of interest as locating the old residence of Thomas Spinney, marked S, and also that of Isaac Remick, marked J. R. "
...
"Christian Remick received his first grant before 1651. Additional grants were made from time to time till he had two hundred and forty acres. He was a leading citizen, filling the offices of Surveyor, Treasurer and Selectman. His homestead on Eliot Neck was given to his son, Joshua. His house stood near the river, not far frcnn the family burial ground. The graves of many of the earlier generations of Remicks are marked by unlettered headstones of rough granite, and close by a fitting memorial has been erected by Lieut. Oliver P. Remick, a descendant of the emigrant, Christian Remick. "
