Walter Briesler Pollock, Jr., 81
Hyannis \emdash Walter Briesler Pollock, Jr., a Hyannis native and former Hyannis firefighter, passed away suddenly on Dec. 28, 2011. He was 81.
Born to Walter Briesler Pollock, Sr., and Gertrude (Henderson) Pollock, he grew up in Hyannis' east end and graduated from Barnstable High School Class of 1948.
Mr. Pollock enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the destroyer minelayer USS Harry F. Bauer in the Mediterranean during the time of the Korean War. He recalled a time when, in a fierce Atlantic storm, he was nearly washed overboard, and his shipmates had to pry his frozen hands free from the lifelines.
Following in his father's footsteps, Mr. Pollock took a job with the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co., in Hyannis. In his decades of service to NET&T and Nynex, Mr. Pollock worked his way from lineman to foreman, to supervisor of the central offices in Hyannis and Vineyard Haven. He made many lifelong friendships during his career, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Like his father and several other family members, Mr. Pollock was a volunteer firefighter in Hyannis, eventually attaining the rank of call lieutenant. He loved this second vocation, serving his community for many years through the 1970s. Even in his old age, he still remembered the spark of excitement that came when the alarm sounded.
Another of Mr. Pollock's passions was fishing, and he traveled with friends to northern Maine each year to fish. Later, he bought land in Ellsworth, ME, where he and dear friend Bill Dame of Hyannis built a camp from the ground up.
Mr. Pollock was also an avid saltwater fisherman, winning several trophies and taking part for many years in the annual Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby on Martha's Vineyard. In recent years, health concerns kept him from fishing as often as he wanted, but he still enjoyed swapping fish stories, which he did while working a retirement job at a nearby tackle shop.
Following a heart attack in the early 1980s, Mr. Pollock made the most of his second chance and met Rosalie (Moser) Gilbert, whom he married in 1991. Having found this great happiness, Mr. Pollock also enjoyed watching his four sons grow to adulthood and find partners of their own. He took great joy and pride in his grandchildren, as well.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Pollock is survived by four sons, Walter III (James), John (Michele), Matthew (Janet) and David (Jo Marie); stepsons David (Ginny) Gilbert and Mark Gilbert; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sisters, Claire and Patricia.
At Mr. Pollock's request, no memorial service will be held.
Donations in Mr. Pollock's memory may be made to the Hyannis Fire Association, 95 High School Rd. Extension, Hyannis, MA 02601.
