Wikipedia:
He was born to Eliakim Phelps, a clergyman, who, during Austin's childhood, was the principal of a girls school in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He then after became pastor of a Presbyterian church in Geneva, New York. Mr. Phelps' son studied at Hobart College from 1833 to 1835, then at Amherst for a year, and later obtained a degree in 1837 from the University of Pennsylvania.
He studied theology at Union Theological Seminary, at the Yale Divinity School, and later at Andover. Circa 1840, he was licensed to preach by the Third Presbytery of Philadelphia. During the Autumn of 1842, he married Elizabeth Phelps (née Stuart, August 13, 1815 - December, 1852). Around the time he got married, he was pastor of the Pine Street (Congregational) Church in Boston. In the Spring of 1848 his family moved to Andover and from then till 1879 was professor of sacred rhetoric and homiletics at Andover Theological Seminary. Later to become president from 1869 to 1879, when his failing health forced him to resign. With his wife who died of brain fever in 1852, he had three children, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (b. 1844), Moses Stuart (b. 1849) and Amos Lawrence (b. 1852).
His second wife is Elizabeth's sister, Mary Stuart (b. 1822), whom he married in 1854, but who would die eighteen months later. His last married partner was Mary Ann Johnson (1829 - 1918), a woman from Boston who gave him two children. He died on the 13th of October 1890 at Bar Harbor, Maine.
Works
His Theory of Preaching (1881) and English Style in Public Discourse (1883) became standard textbooks. With Professors E. A. Park and D. L. Furber he edited Hymns and Choirs (1860), and with Professor Park and Lowell Mason The Sabbath Hymn Book (1859). The Still Hour (1859), a summary of a series of sermons on prayer, is a devotional classic.
His other works are:
The New Birth (1867), portraying conversion (in some instances) as a gradual change
Sabbath Hours (1874)
Studies of the Old Testament (1878)
Men and Books (1882)
My Portfolio (1882)

A biography from the period reads:
"Striking originality and a peculiar aptness for mingling the seen and the unseen elements in life have had much to do with making the author of "The Gates Ajar" so popular with a large class of readers. Elizabeth Stuart Phelps - the name by which she is known to the world - was born in Boston, Mass., August 31, 1844. Her father was Rev. Austin Phelps, professor of sacred rhetoric in Andover Theological Seminary, who, in 1848, removed his family from Boston to Andover. The daughter received a thorough education, and began to write for the press at the age of thirteen. Her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, was an author of note, and after her death, in 1852, Miss Phelps, who had been christened with another name, took her mother's name in full. Much of her life has been devoted to benevolent work in Andover, to the advancement of women, and to temperance and kindred reforms. In 1876 she delivered a course of lectures before the students of Boston University. Her published works include "Ellen's Idol," "Up Hill," "The Tiny Series," "The Gypsy Series," "Mercy Gliddon's Work," "I Don't Know How," "The Gates Ajar," "Men, Women, and Ghosts," "The Silent Partner," "Hedged In," "The Story of Avis," "My Cousin and I," "Old Maid's Paradise," "Sealed Orders," "Jack the Fisherman," "The Master of Magicians," and many others, besides numerous sketches, stories and poems for magazines. In October, 1888, she was married to Rev. Herbert D. Ward. Her most popular book is "The Gates Ajar," which reached its twentieth edition within a year after its publication. All her works are marked by elevated spirit and profound thoughtfulness."

Wikipedia
Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward, born Mary Gray Phelps, (August 31, 1844-January 28, 1911) was an American author. She was born at Andover, Massachusetts, and married Herbert Dickinson Ward, in 1888. In most of her writings she used her mother's name "Elizabeth Stuart Phelps" as a pseudonym, both before and after her marriage. She also used the pseudonym, Mary Adams.
Ward wrote three Spiritualist novels, The Gates Ajar, Between the Gates and Beyond the Gates, and a novella about animal rights, Loveliness. While writing other popular stories, she was also a great advocate, by lecturing and otherwise, for social reform, temperance, and the emancipation of women.
