Tongues wagged and gossip galore went about the Town of Provincetown when the schooner, Harriet Neal, Captain Pettingell in command, arrived in November, 1851, at Provincetown, with her flag at half-mast. Captain Pettingell reported that he had taken charge after the schooner's Captain, Bush, jumped overboard on October 25th, while the Harriet Neal was at sea.

William Bush accused John Pettingill, Nehemiah Y Higgins and James Ryan, all of Provincetown, of conspiring to kill and destroy his son, James, by throwing him into the sea. After testimony of other crew members, the judge decided no crime had been committed within his jurisdiction.
Captain John Pettengil was master of the 115 ton schooner VIRGINIAN out of Orleans in 1852 and 1853 whaling in the north Atlantic. He was captain of the 86 ton schooner M. KING IN 1854, 1855 and 1856. Returning on the last voyage on June 16, 1857. He took command of the 132 ton schooner E. NICKERSON and sailed in August, Samuel Soper a member of KHL [King Hiram's Lodge, Provincetown Masons] was the ship's agent. The ship, Pettengil, his wife and two children were lost on that voyage.
