Notes
General:
1849 seaman, Truro

"Elopement. - The Banner says that Mr. Thomas L. Peterson of Truro, has eloped with Miss Huldah Atwood, of that place.-- Peterson is a married man, and leaves an estimable wife and four chiuldren in Truro. The girl is of respectable parents, and has hitherto borne character for extraordinary steadiness and sobriety. She is about 18 years of age and rather pretty. It is reported that Peterson recently raised some $500 on a note which he deposited in our Bank, having some of the 'solid men' of Truro as endorsers. It is said that he carried off about $1500 and left a small amount with his wife." Barnstable Patriot, 20 Jul 1858, p2

"In July of 1858, he left his wife and four children and "eloped" with a 19-year-old Huldah Atwood, of Truro. He fleeced some of the "good men" of Truro out of some money. The couple were discovered in Boston "bound to California." I don't think they ever went there, as he was back in Truro working as a sailmaker shortly thereafter. He and his wife also had a fifth child.

Peterson was appointed as an acting master in the Civil War. In 1862 he left the Brooklyn Navy Yard for Louisiana where he joined the HARTFORD, Adm. Farragut's flagship. In early 1863 he was acting master on the gunboat DIANA in the bayous of Louisiana. On March 28, 1863, he was ordered by Gen. Weitzel to reconnoiter a route to see what he could learn about rebel strongholds along the bayous. He was given a specific route to follow and specific orders which he chose to disobey. This resulted in the gunboat being attacked, Peterson being shot and killed, and a number of the crew also killed, wounded, or captured and sent to rebel prison camps. He has the distinction of being the only Cape Cod naval officer killed in the Civil War."

"U.S.S. Diana, Acting Master Thomas L. Peterson, reconnoitering the Atchafalaya River, Louisiana, with troops embarked, was attacked by Confederate sharpshooters and fieldpieces. In action that lasted almost 3 hours, casualties were heavy, Diana's ''tiller ropes were shot away, the engines disabled, and she finally drifted ashore when it was impossible to fight or defend her longer, and she ultimately surrendered to the enemy."" This Day in US Military History (tdiumh.blogspot.com)

"The U.S.S. Diana was captured by Captain Timothy D. Nettles and the Valverde Battery (12th Texas Field Battery) on March 28, 1863 on the Atchafalaya River. On April 11, 1863 the Diana was introduced into Confederate service and, along with Nettles' artillery, was instrumental in driving back Union forces at Bayou Teche. Capt. Nettles fell ill and Capt. Oliver Semmes assumed command on April 13. After engaging Union Forces at Bayou Tech and Camp Bisland the Diana made repairs and was ordered up river to Franklin, La. When the Confederate forces were forced to withdraw from Franklin, Captain Semmes and his crew abandoned and burned the Diana to prevent her recapture by the Federals.

The U.S. Diana was built in Brownsville, Pa., 1858. 239 tons. First home port, Galveston, Texas. She was captured by U.S. forces April 27, 1862, and used as a U.S. transport. Recaptured by the Confederates March 28, 1863, and was burned on Bayou Teche to prevent capture, April 12, 1863. Her boilers were long visable on shore there.

A US Marine's diary that mentions the burial of the Diana's captain and senior officer near Brashear City in these words: "The bodies of her captain and executive officer had been recovered, and were to be buried that afternoon. It being a military funeral, the marines and sailors of the Clifton were invited, and for the first time in our life we took part in a soldier?s burial. The marines acted as guard of honor. We buried them in a beautiful orange grove, close by the town. May they rest in peace." " Brashear City is now Morgan City. (History-sites.com) 19
